Really, it is.

IMAGE: http://photos.appleinsider.com/pro-130610.jpg

It looks like Apple is continuing to move away from CPU and more into GPU computing. This one comes with a single cpu (up to 12 cores/24 threads) and two ATI video cards with a total of 6 GB of vRAM, and the ability to drive three 4k displays concurrently.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

No spinning hard drive, either. All SSD.

Is there a new version of the Xeon E5 on it's way?
Everything I can find shows only 8 cores max for the E5, and 10 cores for the E7?

Or have Apple gotten cores and threads confused in their marketing?

And what about Nvidia support? I can see a lot of Premier Pro users buying Dells and HP's tomorrow.

I was taken aback by it at first. But I do like the small size, and the cylinder shape does seem to make sense in terms of cooling efficiency. I just wish it wasn't shiny black plastic; a silver aluminium shell would've looked better in my opinion.

However I imagine for most it will be prohibitively expensive.

9.9 inches tall x 6.6 inches diameter. That is small. When I saw the picture I thought it was the same height as a tower PC. Yup, brushed aluminum would look a lot nicer than shiny plastic. This thing has the latest and greatest technology including 801.11ac (successor of wireless N).

Not sure, just repeating what's on the news sites. It indicates a new Xeon so maybe so.

If they were using PP before with their Macs, there's no reason to change since the previous versions also used ATI graphics. It's too bad Adobe doesn't use Apple's APIs for leveraging the gpu because then their code would be hardware-independent.

The tube is brushed aluminum from what I've read.

You mean Open CL, rather an Apples API, as they would let them leverage both Ati and Nvidia cards :)
There was a link posted some time ago that went into a discussion about why Adobe chose CUDA for Premier Pro, at the time it was the best option for them and delivered the best performance.
However, they have kept developing Open GL and Open CL support to get around the problem of CUDA being a proprietary system.

I'd rather have internal disks.

I was perplexed about the 12 core thing as well. Did they cram two hexacores in there?

Either way, this thing has multiple personality disorder. A potentially twelve core workstation limited to the one internal SSD, questionable choice, expandability or upgradability in video cards and storage is just bizarre. Thunderbolt? Great, I'd rather have more internal drive space and PCIe 3 outperforms Thunderbolt 2 handily if you want to add to the system's capabilities.

Curious what it will sound like, Apple's cutesy designs usually sound like jet engines under load and that would not be good here.

Either Intel are about to release a new Xeon series, and Apple have beaten them to it with the media release, or there are two CPUs in there and the marketing is wrong, or its a 6 core with hyperthread, and the marketing is wrong.....

I discribed it two someone as the new Mac Pro by Dyson. It looks pretty, it has great air flow and it sucks.

No offence or Apple hate meant here but.. Yuck!

Also Intel has 50 Core Xeon (external link) chips now but we wont see them come to market for another 10 years.

.

They must be using the new E5-2600 V2's that have not been released yet.

From the Apple site

The new power structure.

Engineered around workstation graphics with dual GPUs, PCI Express-based flash storage, high-performance Thunderbolt 2, new-generation Xeon processors, ultrafast memory, and support for 4K video, the new Mac Pro delivers state-of-the-art performance across the board.

Processor.

The new Mac Pro is muscle through and through, starting with the new-generation Intel Xeon E5 chipset. With configurations offering up to 12 cores of processing power, up to 40GB/s of PCI Express gen 3 bandwidth, and 256-bit-wide floating-point instructions, you’ll never be at a loss for speed.

Graphics

Traditionally, pro computers have relied primarily on the CPU for their computing power. But as GPU performance has dramatically increased, software developers have begun to leverage that power in their apps. With the new Mac Pro, we looked ahead and engineered an even more powerful GPU architecture. Not only does it feature a state-of-the-art AMD FirePro workstation-class GPU with up to 6GB of dedicated VRAM — it features two of them. With all that power, you’ll be able to do things like seamlessly edit full-resolution 4K video while simultaneously rendering effects in the background — and still have enough power to connect up to three high-resolution 4K displays.

Storage

There’s flash storage, and then there’s next-generation PCI Express flash storage. We’re talking storage that’s up to 2.5 times faster than the fastest SATA-based solid-state drive and up to 10 times faster than a 7200-rpm SATA hard drive. Most flash storage systems connect via SATA buses designed for slower spinning hard drives. But we designed the new Mac Pro around new PCI Express-based flash controller technology to deliver the fastest solid-state drives available standard in a desktop computer. So booting up, launching apps, even opening massive files happens in, well, a flash.

Expansion, vastly expanded.

In creating a pro computer for the future, we wanted to provide an enormous amount of expansion — without being limited to the space inside the enclosure. Designed with built-in Thunderbolt 2, USB 3, Gigabit Ethernet, and HDMI 1.4 ports, Mac Pro sets a new standard in flexible, high-performance expansion. It’s our most expandable Mac yet. And it has everything you need to build a workstation completely customized to what you need and how you work.

All the best
