Hi, I have a 5DII and a 580 EXII flash. It was my first time using it extensively this weekend outdoors shooting a wedding and when I was shooting in AV mode wide open, if the shutter speed was faster than 1/180 sec, the shot was overexposed. I did a little research and learned about my shutter sync speed. I switched it to High Speed in the camera functions just playing around outdoors and shooting wide open is now possible with really fast shutter speeds. Is there any disadvantages to keeping it on High Speed shutter sync?

Thanks :)

No disadvantage. The flash will revert to normal operation when the shutter speed is at or below sync speed.

OP, just be aware that you flash range is significantly reduced with HSS. Your flash should display a distance meter on it so pay attention to that. HSS is indeed very useful, btw.

God Bless,
Ralph

Do you think that would be the case with other flashes, such as 430EX II? There really is no need for HSS below Sync speed.

If its not needed then it doesnt activate so there is no issue having HSS activated on any canon flash that has it. The only reason to turn it off is to prevent its inadvertent use as it costs you close to two stops of light as soon as you go into HSS mode.

so I was just about the make my own thread about this but the search feature found this thread for me.

I am also looking into HSS particulalry with the YN-568 is it worth the extra money? a flash without HSS ability is half the cost. so there is no disadvantage and I turn it on and then forget about it and just use my 7D as normal? I am speaking about outdoor portraits with my 135L and distances to maybe give me a full length horizontal shot but not one with terribly large amounts of negative space

In the special case of a 135L lens and full body shots, the shooting distance will be probably to long for any HSS flash. However, It can be a handy feature on shorter lenses or close ups in sunshine. I recommend to have at least one flash with HSS because the price difference is really small. At thephotogadget.com (external link) it is just 166.99 instead of 145.99.

Consider that with 135mm lens, the flash will set itself for the narrowest coverage angle (105mm), and the Canon 580EX usual GN190 becomes GN95 as soon as you are even 1/3EV faster than X-sync shutter speed (1/320 rather than 1/250 for APS-C). And at 1/640 the flash drops another -1EV in power to GN67. That means that at ISO 100 and 1/640, the 580EX only reaches as far as 17' at the narrowest coverage angle. At 17', a 135mm lens on APS-C frames very small area, less than 2' x 3'. But at f/4 in the bright sunlight, Sunny 16 rule says about 1/1600 is needed for proper exposure!
