Agreed. This is a ridiculous joke. No doubt, however, there will be people who defend the pricing and f/6.4.
I don't understand what has happened to Leica. They have decided that there's more money in jewellery than in photography, I suppose. With the possible exception of the M Monochrom (which, to be fair, does what it does very well), Leica's digital cameras do absolutely nothing for me.
And I say that as an avid user of Leica film camera, which are unparalleled for what I shoot.
In some ways, I think it is how they stay afloat; and it is really nothing new. As I assume you already know, but for those who might not, the Leica M6, which is an excellent camera, was nevertheless delivered in various collectors-only configurations (sometimes quite gaudy at that), generating revenue from those wanting prestigious jewelry. I can only speculate that this extra cash flow has compensated somewhat for what otherwise remain niche-constrained profits from their traditional Leica M models (whether film or digital).
Leica nearly went under in the late 70s following objection to the M5 and then again around 2005.
Milking the affluent, however, does not reflect on the quality or utility of their 'proper' cameras. I will say, at least the dressed-up special edition M6's, often including matching lenses, performed superbly. With this latest release, they must be banking on folks who either don't need a moderately fast lens (I don't even think this thing has IS) or don't know what f/anything means.
Anyway, between this and the complaints surrounding iOS7 and the newly revealed Mac Pro, it makes for pretty entertaining reading…in limited amounts, of course.
Meanwhile, I'll keep using my M2 and iiif.
