Be honest. A guy I shot some images of snowboarding during the season surprised me and sent me 8 logos for free. I happen to like this one the most. He asked me to give him some honest feed back so he can tweak it. I was thinking of adding a little color. What do you guys think?

...I don't normally comment on these things because I am no expert: but just wanted to point out the obvious. When the logo is scaled back to the size of your avatar I can't make out what the blob is on the right, and I can't read the words photography.

The logo reminds me of the covers of older spy novels; like the early Bond books. The photographer silhouette has a lot of energy in it, and I like that. I also like the idea of how the text was done, reducing in size downward, but I don't like the font that was used for your name. Once I started noticing how all the serifs started running into, or overlapping, each other, those points were all I was seeing. Adding color might be fun; perhaps just your surname, or the photographer, but color won't do anything for the font choice.

Overall; I give it a fail. I don't think it represents the quality of the images you create.

I don't care much for the font he used for your name, especially where serifs run together (look up "kerning" if you're not familiar with that aspect of typography). On the whole, though, it looks good. I would try a brighter color than the gray for "P H O T O G R A P H Y." Maybe a blue. As b-bear said, it won't work if made very small.

I really appreciate the honest feedback and kind words. I posted this on my FB page as well and got a ton of useful feedback. After all it was free. But the guy who made it is willing to work with me and create what I want. I have a busy weekend but I'll likely mull it over, do some brainstorming myself and collaborate with the graphic designer next week to try and refine it in a big way. Exciting process nonetheless :)

I like it, my only tweak would be to remove the flash/pocket wizard on the camera. But probably the most original looking logo I've seen in quite some time.

I agree! Just the camera is perfect, no flash.

From an aesthetic point of view, the illustration needs to be on the other side of the text.
He needs to be looking into the frame towards the text, not out of it.

I don't agree. He isn't shooting the text. He's shooting something unknown that's outside the frame. But if the OP uses this logo on letterheads and invoices and so forth, it should go at the left side of the page.

At first glance the guy looks like he is shooting a gun...

I would suggest:

1. Adjust the kerning (spaces between letters, or lack of) to make it more even.

2. Move the photographer guy out and not overlapping the words quite so much.

3. Check copyright usage on the logo, specifically the photographer guy. http://depositphotos.com …houette-photographer.html (external link)

4. Finally make sure you receive the finally logo in a large raster or a vector file that you will be able to use for the future. It would be very inconvenient if you needed a higher resolution copy for something and all you had was a small image, especially if you are going to rebrand everything with this.

This is my first thought as well. Many people only think to consider their logo at a pretty large size, when a major criteria for a successful logo is clear reproduction at small sizes. Unfortunately, this logo won't reproduce well, as proved by your avatar.

In logo design, I always go with the less is more mentality. You need to be able to scale this at about 1"x1" and clearly see what it is. Also, I feel like the photographer guy is kinda clip-arty. It is free though so I wouldn't be to demanding about what this guy does for you.

How about something like this? Note, this is just a quick mock-up that I did in GIMP to show the idea; it is not meant to be a final version. I increased the silhouette size a bit to add some depth, took off the flash, and added some color.

And Ryan, why not avoid the whole copyright issue with the silhouette; just make your own. Take a picture of you, holding your own equipment, and convert it; you can have any pose that you want, and it's all yours!

I still think there are many typefaces more attractive than that one.

The figure's butt is too close to the vertical line in the Y in MACKAY. The small amount of white between those two black areas will vanish in reductions. It's already gone in one place.
