Backdrop for Newborns?

So I was recently asked to do a newborn session- completely outside my realm. There seems to be a big market for htat around here however so I think I may bite the perverbial bullet and start doing them.

My questions though, is, does anyone who do these typically use a backdrop? And if so, what color? Solid muslin, vinyl, paper?

Mostly, I just use the same blanket they are laying on and pull it up behind them so the whole scene is the same color. I do a lot of newborn 7 baby shoots in my house and often just use the back of my brown sofa, then add a textured over-lay in photo shop. They come out awesome & it is a lot more convenient than storing a bunch of backdrops.

Where are you located?

I was thinking about a solid black muslin but I want it to be very portable. One of these collapsible backdrops comes to mind instantly but I don't know if I want to be limited to just one color- but if I am I'm curious as to what color would be the most versitile.

I'm in Lemoore, CA. About 1 hour south of Fresno.

I use whatever is available. Sometimes I throw up a black backdrop, and sometimes I nothing. You shouldn't have a lot of background showing or in focus. As I have learned, make sure it is all about the baby.

Thanks for the examples Brad! I have to say, that last one is dynamite! Maybe I'm just over thinking these portraits because their outside my comfort zone...not sure why, though, since I have 4 kids. Or maybe I'm seeing this an a "reason" to get a backdrop kit.

I use a variety depending on my mood or parent's request.

Go to hobby lobby, michaels, or any craft store. Look for teacher's board paper (tube rolled up). $8 for backgrounds is pretty darn cheap.

If you have a Joanne's fabrics or IKEA anywhere nearby, they are perfect. I just use blankets or pieces of cloth
