Thanks .Nope. Continuous AF in video is a function of the body, not the lens. Since the 60D doesn't have that feature, adding an STM lens won't make a difference. An EF 18-55 STM was announced with the T5i in March. 50D | 5D | Tokina 12-24 f/4 | 24-85 f/3.5-4.5 | 24-105 f/4L | 50 f/1.8 | 70-200 f/4L | Metz 50 AF-1

I think the 700D and 100D are the same but not 100% sure. The 18-55 STM is an EF mount AFAIK so they will fit your 60D. I have used the 40 STM pancake on my 5D3, 7D and 60D when I had it and that's great. As I have a FF and a 1.3 crop and 1.6 crop I won't buy any EF-S lenses anymore, the only one I have access to is the wife's 18-135 and he hardly ever uses it anyway. The 60D does not have the Hybrid AF, so it will not have continuous autofocus in video mode like the latest bodies in the Rebel series. I had a chance to try out the 40mm STM recently and while the STM motors in general are great for the continuous AF in video, and also their overall quietness compared to the old kit lenses in general day to day use for photography, for video work I found that it didn't really provide a benefit in real use. For rack focusing in video, or anything which requires manual focus while you are recording, the onboard mic will record the sound of the motor as its fly-by-wire. If you plan on doing a lot of video with the STM lenses that requires manual focusing, consider getting an offboard sound recording solution. But otherwise the updates to the 18-55 like internal focusing, a proper focus ring, and improved IQ are definitely worthy of consideration. Just a soul with a camera

It feels *almost* like a proper lens - the above points are mostly valid. Can't compare IQ, but AF is very quick. I'm not convinved about build quality though, it's still got a plastic mount... 6D, 40D, EOS M, and various lenses

I'm not convinved about build quality though, it's still got a plastic mount... ![]() Yes, it's still plastic but the build quality has improved from the previous version: Every now and then, it is time for a new "kit" lens in the Canon lens lineup. Normally this is nothing to get overly excited about since most of the "upgrades" are just on the cosmetical side. However, the latest update - the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 STM IS - is a little different since Canon came up with a completely new lens offering not only an updated optical design but also an improved construction as well as a new AF motor so it's worth to have a deeper look once more. Honestly speaking, the previous Canon standard kit lenses had a rather cheap if not crappy build quality which clearly reflected the attempt to push the cost cuttings to the max. This new little fellow is still not carved from granite, of course, but things are somewhat better now. It's still an all-plastic shell but the inner lens tube doesn't wobble quite as much and it now features a non-rotating front element. Another improvement is a dedicated 'proper' focus ring. Your heart will still not jump for joy when using the zoom or focus rings but, to be fair, it is quite decent now really.
