Incredible images in this thread already. Mine pales in comparison, but I will improve! Taken with the 60D, 70-200L IS with 1.4 extender. 1/125 second, f/5.6 ISO 1600...

Powerslave, are you using a blind to get that close. Using a 50, you had to have been practically within touching distance. Or do you have some magic chant you do to get that close.

Here's the setup.

I do even closer sometimes but the tripod needs to be placed in a different way, which changes the background of the shot.

Life would definitely be easier with a magic chant though .. or a 300mm+ L.

This is only my second attempt using flash. I'm using very very low power, 1/64th, using the built-in diffuser that zooms to 14mm and only during daytime. They don't even flinch. If anyone knows if using flash is not a good thing, please tell me!

I must also mention, I'm wearing a bright blue t-shirt, and every time I go near the feeder, their frequency of visit seems to increase! I've observed this over multiple days with different colored clothes.

Black seems to scare them away.

Losing detail on bright red surfaces is very easy. I noticed a flatness in my photos of red flowers and asked about it here. The same unwanted uniformity in red areas often turns up in other people's flower images in Landscapes and in flowers in hummingbird photos. When the subject is a hummingbird, is blown-out red in a flower considered a flaw?

The lack of red sensitivity in most DSLR sensors plays a role in the loss of detail in red areas. If the detail in the red channel is deficient those areas will appear "blown-out". This shortfall is why many DSLR astrophotographers hack their cameras, removing or replacing the factory filter to increase reception of red data. Emission nebulas for example are very high in red data so a modified(hacked) DSLR will increase the red channel info.

Slightly underexposing and then carefully guarding the red channel "hot" areas in post process will help with flowers and Hummingbirds. The iridescent gorget (bib) of the male Ruby-throated Hummingbird seen above is one of the most difficult to expose since that area is so high on the histogram. I wouldn't call it a flaw but red control is a challenge that takes some practice to tame.

Fantastic hummingbird pictures here and great idea for a thread!!

This was my first year trying to capture these birds.
All handheld with my 70-300 and no feeders.

Thanks! These were all taken in my yard. The wisteria brought them in, then they went to some large bush in my yard when red flowers started blooming on it. They also like the eucalyptus trees, that I have around the house. :D
I never even noticed them before I started taking bird pictures (it's been about a year now).

Beautiful!!

Thanks!

I was checking out plants/flowers to buy/plant that would attract them more. I referred to some list but wasn't sure what the best choice would be so just picked up some Petunias that are in bloom!

Saw the hummer try those, for a second before heading back to the feeder. I wonder if they can go back to flowers after tasting the concentrated nectar from the feeder.
