Brown thrasher with worm and scissors beak

I have observed this brown thrasher in my back yard for several days. It has a case of scissors beak. The only one like this I have seen. Its malformed beak does seem to affect its survivability, however. In fact, shortly after this shot, a young brown thrasher scampered out of the bushes to get fed by this adult.

An unfortunate deformity, while not common, it is not super rare either.

This reminded me of a time my wife and I used to raise exotic rabbits. We had a Netherland Dwarf with a malocclusion. Wild rabbits that develop this will eventually starve since their teeth grow like toenails. Unable to grind their teeth and and wear them naturally, their teeth grow unchecked until they can no longer chew. We had to periodically clip our rabbits teeth with toenail clippers. Made me cringe but it was painless for the rabbit. It lived a good long life.
