Why is Elements 10 showing more blown highlights than my 600D does? I had to shoot JPegs for my last shoot, including some sunsets, but opening them as Camera Raw files using the 'Open As' command reveals loads more blown highlights, even though they don't look too bleached out. What's the problem? The camera or Elements?
Regards,
Col.

To clarify, when you said "opening them as Camera Raw files" you meant that you opened them in Adobe Camera Raw ... correct?

In your camera and in ACR, what color space is your output set to, aRGB or sRGB? If the camera is aRGB and ACR is set to convert files to sRGB, an image that has no clipped shadows or highlights from the camera can show significant clipping with the ACR histogram. The same thing will happen if your working color space in Photoshop is sRGB. If the image from the camera is aRGB and you convert to an sRGB PS working color space then the PS histogram can show clipping.

The way in which your camera records the embedded JPG preview within the RAW files is NOT assumed to be the same parameters as used by a RAW convertor (only CPP tries to use the camera settings in doing intial RAW conversion)

But he said he had to shoot .jpeg's.

What are you comparing - the image in ACR vs the camera LCD? How are you determining they are blown out of the camera - blinkies?

Honestly I don't have an answer, but hoping this is going to lead the conversation towards an explanation.

EJenner, yes it's the blinkies I compare. Bob, what's the best, RGB or sRgb? And how do I change ACR to match?

If you don't have a clear understanding about color management you should stick to sRGB throughout.

- Set your camera to sRGB jpeg
- At the bottom of the ACR screen it will tell you wich color space you're using. Click on it and set it to 8 bit sRGB jpeg (while it doesn't really matter much, I'd also set resolution to 300 PPI).
- Set your working space for Photoshop to sRGB

Also, since you are shooting jpeg there is no need to use ACR. You can open the file directly into Photoshop.

Until you have a clear understanding of color spaces and the advantages and disadvantages of using larger ones like aRGB you really should keep things simple. Frankly, you'd get more benefit from shooting RAW than using a larger color space. Master an sRGB jpeg workflow first, then consider moving to a RAW workflow. You may find you'll never need to to work with large color spaces like aRGB or ProPhoto RGB.
