Is 7d a good upgrade for 40d

My 40d is getting a bit long in the tooth now even so I still like it, is the 7d a worthy upgrade? Can anyone who had a 40d and now shoots with a 7d tell me the main advantages of the 7d and has it improved their photos etc.

Better high ISO but watch for noise and it needs more sharpening than the 40D

The AF system is a major upgrade, as are a number of the other custom settings and such. I, also, found that the higher resolution normally requires less cropping while also giving more latitude to crop when needed.

They have come down in price and are quite affordable , it's not the higher pixels I'm interested in,its the focus speed and accuracy that appeals to me

The only reason I moved up to one, originally, was to get better sealing since I wind up out in the drizzle a lot; but, the other features are what really made it an amazing jump for me. I tried keeping the 40 as a backup, but it bugged me enough to not have the other features on the 7D that I finally just bought a second 7D.

I just sold my 2 50ds and bought a 7d a few weeks back. I debated the 6d but opted for the 7d because it had a better AF system. I don't regret it one bit. I just got it a few weeks back but had great luck with the AF tracking at my granddaughter's soccer game. The AL Servo and AF work fantastic! The 7d would be a great upgrade from the 40d. Good luck!

That was my exact change as well, 40D - 7D. You will not regret making the switch. Updated electronics, speed, AF system, ergonomics, etc...

I like shoots sports , the only bit that concerns me about the 7 d and the 40d is the images are a bit soft out of the camera , I find I need to apply quite a bit of sharpening to get them how I like it

I think you guys have convinced me to go out and get one

One other thing guys I'm looking to get a 17-55 focal length range lens , I can't seem to bring myself around to buy the canon 17-55 what's the newish sigma 17-50 is like its a bit cheaper that the canon

I'm upgrading from a S3IS. It will be here next week. Will let you know if there's any difference.

One of my favorite settings in the 7D, for things that move (i.e sports, planes, birds, etc) is that you can dial back the speed at which AF tries to acquire a new target if your subject goes behind another object, player, etc).

I haven't used the Sigma, but the bulk of the reviews I've seen indicate that it's probably the best combination of value and results available in that grouping.

@Snerd and Tongard:

Be prepared for a feeling of having "stepped back" in your shooting when you get started with this one. The combination of tweakable settings, a sensitivity to underexposure and higher resolution showing off deficiencies in technique a lot more, the immediate results can be somewhat disappointing.

But, work with it, make sure to work on getting the custom settings dialed in and just do some practicing to get used to it and it's really one hell of a performer.

I know the feeling when I bought my first dslr 400d I was some what disappointed but learning to shoot raw and extracting the image made all the differance
