soory for my bad english

Hello everybody.
The original photo was not very interesting. This is the result of a little Photoshop demo for a friend. It's not perfect since I only wan't to show some features of PS and I didn't work as accurate as necessary to get a realy good picture (e.g. you can see that the sky color is corrected but wasn't masked precisley).

I am very interested in your C&C's

Thanx in advance
Rafael

I loved your B&W version when I first saw it in your other post, and having seen the original, I can definitely say that you've done a great job with the post processing!

The original photo was nothing special, and wouldn't have rated a second glance, but I like the way that you've cropped it, and the B&W conversion is great. I can't think of any way to improve upon it. :)

The monochrome conversion has very high range of tonality. The blacks are very deep and the highlights are right there on the verge of blowing out. I think you have used up the entire dynamic range of my monitor.

I would expect that image to make a very brilliant print in the style of Ansel Adams.

The composition is very good and the vantage point that you chose gives an excellent perspective and I can almost hear the diesel throbbing in the ship that is chugging along down the Main river.

My only criticism is that the ship is heading out of the picture. That could not be helped from this vantage point unless you choose to wait for a ship coming upstream - dann geht alles besser!

As mentioned, the B&W conversion is outstanding. Very nice work.

uh-oh Bob, it looks to me like the ship IS headed up stream, you can make out the faint lines in the water and see the swell in the front. Not being picky but it does appear to be "coming at ya"

great job on the conversion.

Dear Zacker,

For some reason, I was thinking that the river disappeared off to the right, but apparently it is disappearing off to the left, so I guess you're right, because Frankfurt is definitely on the north side of the Main. From his vantage point, you can't really tell which way the river goes once it goes under the bridge and up to the old town center.

I guess if I could remember the lay of the land around there better, I would know better, but I usually went to and from Frankfurt on the A-66 - Hi!

Thanks a lot for your C&C. The Main river is disappearing to the left of the picture. The ship is going up the river.

It's allways nice to hear that so many people stayed in Frankfurt and liked it (a litle bit)...

I like the b&w version much better and I am normally partial to color shots of images like this. Nicely done.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

I could have sworn that the ship was coming down the river to the right of the picture if the photographer himself did not say the opposite.?

lol actually, if you look at the waters horizon (just past the bridge) it looks like the ship had to climb up a waterfall...lol

you can make out faint wake lines behind the ship, my guess is that it was moving really slowley.

For those who are still intersted where the Main river "goes":
This is the bridge from where I shoot the photo. It's exactly in the middle of the map. I was looking west (down the river). The ship goeas east (up the river). When you zoom out of the map you can see where the Main river goes...

Vielen Dank, Raphael,

I should have realized, also, that the Sun is in the South, not in the North.

Superb PP work - just shows how a bit of Photoshop can turn an average shot into a great one. :-)

Can I ask how you did the B&W conversion?

@ red_fan: I choosed the picture for a little Photoshop demo to show a friend what you could get out of an ordinary RAW photo. So what you see here is the result of Histogram work and channel mixing for the B&W. The sky was on a seperate layer to archive a higher contrast and a more dramatic look. As you can see I didn't spend that much time to mask the skyline properly from the sky (it was just a demo). This coould be done a litlle bit better I think.
