:-(
This morning I dropped my beloved little one, it fell from just about 1 meter and it doesn't focus anymore (nether autofosus nor manual), the ring turns more or less normally but the lenses don't move...
I'll try canon service for repair but I'm wondering if it's not going to cost me the price of the lens itself

Any suggestions?

big thank in advance

You can send it in for a quote, they won't go ahead with the repairs unless you tell them to.

Given the price of the lens however, you may be right, the repair costs could mean it is best to just buy a new lens. You can try selling this one on eBay for parts/spares.

When I dropped my 70-200 and bent the bayonette mount, I was charged 50EUR (equivalent) total for the fix. I would not expect much less than that for your repair (possibly more).

I dropped mine 35/2 too. I opened it with tiny screwdriver and there was some plastic parts moved out of focusing system. Put it back and now working like a charm. It was not difficult. Sorry my english.

Your English is better than many who speak/write it as a first language :)

I'm seroiusly thinking about self repair...well, not myself...my husband is named "handy manny" :-)

did you open it from the front or from the back and, in this case, how did you keep electric contacts safe?

PS-I'm not an English speaker so...

my 35f2 dropped, and stopped focusing, it cost me $120 to fix it...

with used ones selling for $230 or so, I figured I'd just bite the bullet, as I don't think I could've gotten $100 for it for parts/repair...

hopefully you can fix it yourself...mine dropped 2feet, and required new parts though...

Was that through Canon USA repair or did you go 3rd party?

It cost me about $113 for Canon to fix my 35mm f/2 when I dropped it and the autofocus stopped working. This was in 2007.

it was directly through canon...i just looked at my repair sheet, and they replaced:
the power diaphragm unit, focusing unit, and two lens groups(i think, labeled lens G4, lens G5/6)...

i think the $105 is the standard charge for that lens in the US though...as there wasn't any additional charges for parts, just shipping.

i don't really know how bad my drop was, as I had it on a toybox bench, and it must've slipped from there...all i know is I found it on the ground, and it wasn't focusing, Manual Focus did not work either

Yes, I opened it from the back. 35/2 is not very complicate construction (for a modern lens; no IS or USM) so it is quite easy to fix.

For that price I'd get Canon to repair it. The repair has a short warranty and you can always sell it, probably for a little more than the repair costs if you want to buy something nicer.

I'm very sad, just got the mail from canon with repair prices:
250 euro!!!!
a new one in my local shop comes for 260.
Canon offers me a new 35 f2 for 210 euro, this sounds like a very good deal...thinking of asking them for a new 40 mm pancake (and save a little bit...but I loose f2)

What do you guys and gals think?

Ouch. That sucks. I've repaired a 35/2 before. AF was broken and all it needed was a soldering. Anyway, if you always shoot at f2 you might not like 2.8. For a walkaround lens I guess the 40 is alright but the 35/2 gives you more creativity, in my opinion.

Darn. Sorry to hear that.

I like the 40mm pancake because it is so ridiculously compact with decent optics. A bit shallower DOF aside, I think it is a great swap. It'll be a fun lens that will have a place later on because of that small size.

On my last two trips, I accidentally brought my 40mm pancake along because I didn't realize it was still in the bag!

I sold my 35mm f/2 when I got the 40mm f/2.8. I HATED the micromotor on the 35mm, so I was willing to give up the f/2. Plus, the 40mm is very sharp, light, and I like the field of view.

There is a good comparison of the different fields of view and the sharpness of the 35mm f/2 vs 40mm f/2.8 vs 50mm f/1.8 here (external link). It was shocking (for the pixel peepers) to see the difference in sharpness at the corners.

Also a thread on this forum on 35mm f/2 vs 40mm f/2.8.

I am looking for a 24/28mm now to fill in the wide range on full frame.
