Problem processing RAW (.CR2) from Digital Rebel XT

Hi all,

I'm having problems editing .CR2 files from my Digital Rebel XT (350D) that I got eight years ago.

I had never shot in RAW before (never really felt the need) but I recently volunteered to take photos for a friend's baby shower. The lighting was tricky in the room and I thought it would be a good time to try shooting in RAW and do some post-processing.

I installed Digital Photo Professional 1.0.0.5 and that did not work : my .CR2 image files appear as grey boxes with an x through them. I then installed the latest Canon RAW codec off the website (ver 1.11.0) - still grey x's.

I'm running Windows 7 in 64-bit, could this be the issue? Makes me curious why Canon wouldn't support 64-bit... There must be some reason, right?

I'm going to try to look at these in Adobe Photoshop on a Mac at my university .. but it would be nice to have a fix that works at home. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Steph

Have you tried to double-click the CR2 files and if so, what happens? If you are wanting the raw images to display thumbnails in Windows, there is an update you have to install from MS, but it may not be preventing you from still being able to edit the raw just because the thumbnails are Xs.

one of the problems is that you installed prehistoric version of DPP. Install the latest version.

Digital Photo Professional 3.13.0 updater for Windows is software that will update a previously installed (or install) Digital Photo Professional to version 3.13.0.

get it from www.canoneos.com (external link)

The rebel XT would probably use a prehistoric version of DPP, remember that camera is probably around a decade old at this point (or very nearly). Back then, actually, we were all using zoombrowser.

The 350D came bundled with DPP 1.6. That or any later version will support it. The current is something like 3.13.

but you don't want to use prehistoric version 1.0.0.5 that was coded for XP (or older) on 64bit windows 7.

Why? I have run alot of older 3rd party tools in compatibility mode on my Win764 machines. In any case, let's just see exactly what the problem is. I am guessing that the thumbnails are the isssue, and not that the raw files can actually be pulled up in the respective software. It is less likely an issue of associating a .CR2 file to some software that is installed and more how the system is "presenting" the files to the user.

There is no mystery. The 350D may be old, but DPP 1.0 is older.

I will throw this link out to help the OP, but perhaps he/she found their answer elsewhere and won't come back.

It has the same codec that was downloaded, but also has the newest version of DPP.

Hi all,

Apologies for not responding earlier - it's been a busy week!

It turns out the issue was the oldddd version of DPP. (I wasn't sure if that was the version that came with the 350D, because as others have mentioned, it's also pre-historic - I got my camera at Christmas 2005!) Installed the 3.13.0 update and everything works perfectly - thanks much for the links, I wasn't sure where to look. :D

Thanks also for the tip on the thumbnails, though it turned out not to be the case (I couldn't open the RAW files at all in the older version of DPP- the "edit" option was simply greyed out and double-click did nothing).
