Hi all,

Been thinking about maybe replacing my well used Sigma 17-70 (non OS). I am planning to upgrade to a 7D soonish as well. The more I use my 70-200 and 30 1.4 the less happy I am with the 17-70. Almost all my shots I keep/use come form the 70-200 and 30.

Looking at what is around the most logical choice would be 17-55 2.8 IS or maybe the 15-85. Alternatively I could just go with a newer 17-70.

Not sure on a budget but it probably needs to have equal value to quality, if you know what I mean.

Thanks in advance.
Tim

I upgraded from the 17-70 non-os to the 17-70 os (not the new version). I find the newer version sharper and the os is very helpful if you are shooting in low light. It is a little bit faster on the long end (f/4 versus f/4.5). The os version I have has been discontinued for the new 17-70 which is selling for $499 at B&H.

The new version is compatible with the Sigma USB dock so that you can micro adjust the lens through several focal lengths.

If I were replacing my current lens, I would probably stick with the Sigma, but I would take another look at the Canon 15-85.

Edited to add that you also might want to look at the forthcoming Sigma 18-35 f/1.8. New lens that isn't available until the end of July, but the reviews have been pretty stellar. No os, but the lens is compatible with the USB dock. B&H's price is $799.

I use the lens on a 7D.

If you like the range of the 17-70 and don't mind the veritable aperture then look into te new 17-70. So far it has been reviewing VERY well and should be a noticable upgrade from the non-OS 17-70

If you want a constant f2.8 and don't mind a little less range then the canon 17-55 IS, sigma 17-50 OS, and the tamron 17-50 non-IS are all great lens.

The canon 15-85 has a lot of range and IQ is great but is slower (aperture) then any of the other lenses listed
