As some of you might know, badminton venues are known for their notorious lighting conditions. However, LABC (Los Angeles Badminton Club) was not bad at all. Highest ISO I had to go was around 3200 at around 640 shutter speed and f/1.8-2.0.

I know I'll have to get back to poor lit gyms sooner than later, so I guess I'll have to wait fully pushing the 1DX... Thanks for looking and as always CC are welcome.

Your badminton photography keeps getting better and better joonrhee. I love the faces. Great expressions. The only critique I have is that the moments captured appear to be well after the hit with the racquet. Generally, you want to get peak action but perhaps the great expressions are after the hit rather than at impact. #3 would be best if the player were facing the camera.

Nice work. The series is fun to look at.

Phil

Great expressions captured, I think for those the moments have been really well chosen - in most of them you can see the shuttle and have an idea of whether it's before or after a hit. #5 and #6 are my favourites, and #7 needs to be careful when he lands ... #8 being a little obscured by the net is my only criticism.

The players really look like they are intensely involved in the action and you've captured that very well in your images. Thumbs up!

These are not the only shots, right?

As mentioned before, it appears that the pictures are well before or well after the shuttle has been hit. As a whole set, the shots are a bit repetitive. Mix it up with some shots with the shuttle on the strings.

Try to do some different shots with an adjustment to your shooting position.

They are not, but these are the ones with more action.. As always, I totally understand and appreciate your comments. I'll keep them in mind for next outing. Thanks buddy!

With that gym, and the high ISO capabilities of the 1Dx, why didnt you go to ISO6400 to get you to f2.2-2.8?

Next stop: US Open. Will you be there?

(LABC - is Tony Gunawan coaching there? The lessons present a potential opportunity to practice the timing of action shots)

This was my first time in a long time shooting badminton. I guess I could've used f2.8 but I just wanted to go as shallow as possible. I'm fine with the results. :)

I'm not sure if I'd be shooting at US Open this year. I've been very busy on the weekends with prior engagements (real estate shoot, family shoot, golf with clients, house chores, etc..).

It was my first time at LABC and don't know anything about coaching... I did watch him play at US Open. :D
