Can the owners of this lens comment on the IS noise? I have 5d Mark III and I am aware of the recall but based on the Canon service bulletin, my lens should be fine. Bulletin says lenses with a serial number where last two digits ends with 00, 01, and 02. Mine ends with 03 plus it has a date code of March 2013 so its a pretty new lens and should not have this issue.

The noise I hear is the IS engage/disengage sound and it is a bit louder than 70-200 IS II. It is a very audible 1 click sound. Once IS enables the remaining sound is the regular gyros moving which is fine. But the initial click and the end click is loud. Is this normal?

The box that the lens came in was in a fairly bad shape so I am a bit scared the lens may have been damaged. But then its in that massive case and I see no issues with IQ or viewfinder images.

The sound associated with the 5D3 issue (mine still hasn't been fixed) is almost like a higher pitched "grinding" sound like the IS unit is tearing itself apart

The normal sound should be a stable hum. As long as it's a stable sound, I think it should be fine

But the only way to know for sure is to go to a camera store and try their copy

It is louder than 70-200 f/2.8L IS II though

I do get the normal hum sound. My concern is the first click and the last ones. These happen when IS actives and deactivates itself. The same clicks happen on 70-200 IS II, but with zoom its a lot quieter. This is a brief click sound before the actual IS gyros start moving if that makes sense. I tried zoom and prime one after another and they have the same pattern, click .... gyro humming
... click again but the prime's click is a lot louder. I searched youtube I wish there were videos but there arent.

I have only returned sigma 35. "Every other lens" is an exaggeration. Can you please leave this thread alone and troll someone else's thread? This is quite important.

Thanks for your understanding;)

Where have we arrived when we comment not on the price, weight, handling, IQ, size of a lens but the noise it makes? "quite important..." ?

Can you guys just please let the people who own the lens respond?

Its a brand new lens, the box was half way destroyed when it arrived. I want to check a) is it 5d3 issue b) is it because of damage.

The noise, if normal, is absolutely irrelevant. I dont care. I love the pictures this lens produces. I just want to make sure the lens is not defective. Even sending this to canon for repairs will cost me 250 bucks. I dont want to return it because focus and sharpness is perfect.

I think its best when I go home and post a video of the noise. I hope you are right because I am in love with this lens and would not want to return it.

I imagine your 200 sounds the way it should. My 300 f2.8 makes similar sounds to my 70-200 II but much louder, while my 100 is bit quieter as well as my 24-105. From what I've seen and read the bigger lens the more noise the IS makes. It's also not uncommon for the same lens model to be a bit louder/quieter without anything being wrong, so if you compare yours to the one in the store it might be a slightly louder but still be fine/normal.

My 200/2 IS noise is more noticeable than I remember the 70-200/II being...it's more like the 300/2.8.

First, congrats on your new purchase! Second, it is perfectly normal. The IS noise from 200L is definitely louder than the 70-200.

Just for your reference, my outer brown box came with a tear in the middle from Amazon. It was raining on the day of delivery and the box came semi wet as well. I was intially very worried that the lens could have been damaged. However, nothing was wrong inside and just kept it. I didn't want to return it just because the outer brown box was damaged. The lens turned out super sharp and couldn't be happier. I still have that brown box all nicely taped up just because I like keeping all my boxes.

Here are the videos as promised. Please note that I am using a shotgun mic and it's pretty sensitive. Watch them both back to back and turn the volume up all the way.
