Hi,

I have the 70-300L but I assume this applies to any of the other lenses with a panning mode for IS. I know that it was mentioned that the lens is smart enough to know if the camera is horizontal or vertical, and would ignore hortizontal movement accordingly. But I was wondering, what if the camera is not perfectly one or the other--does the panning mode work if the camera is tilted and thus the axis would be a diagonal?

Thanks. :)

Why not test your lens out and tell us the answer. First hand is always best.

Firstly, it doesn't ignore any movement and both sensors continue to operate and both correction motors also continue to operate.

The IS system recognises the direction of panning...be it horizontal, vertical or any number of diagonal vectors....and makes all corrections except ones that are in the direction that it has calculated that the lens is moving in.

(I hope that made sense)

The mode 2 vertical/horizontal has more to do with panning direction than camera orientation. My guess is that mode 2 would work best if the camera is at an angle if the pan is also running vertically/horizontally to the camera. I think what you're looking to do is something like a pan across the horizon with the camera tilted which I believe would require IS to support diagonal panning and as far as I know even the latest IS doesn't do this yet.

With that said I haven't had issues with slightly diagonal pans and anytime I've done more extreme angles the shutter speeds was high enough so any issues IS might of caused didn't show up.

Edit: Maybe Bob is right that it will also recognises diagonal pans, but that's not how it sounds in my manuals.

My answer is based on Chuck Westfall's description/explanation in an article for The Digital Journalist a few years ago.
