Hi. Is there any advantage to output sharpening before converting from 16 bit to 8 bit, or am I just wasting memory resources?

Conventional wisdom suggests that getting your file to the correct file size, dimensions and bit depth is the time to do any sharpening.

Which makes sense if you think about it.

Yes but capture sharpening is usually done in 16bit, if 16 bit is where you are doing the touchups...

Yes, I usually do a 2 sharpening workflow. Capture sharpening (either at 16bit or 8bit), than output sharpening (at 8bit). Depending on the final, usually different for paper output or screen....but either way I am a follower of 2 sharperning workflow.

I do a 3-step sharpening process where the capture and creative phases are done in 16-bit.

All my editing is done in 16-bit mode and that includes the final sharpening. The only time I convert to 8-bit, implicitly or explicitly, is just before saving the file as a JPEG file. The exception to this, which is rare, is when I need to apply a filter that's not available in 16-bit mode.
