Adobe makes lightroom. Do you mean photoshop or lightroom?

Start with Lightroom. It has an excellent feature set for importing, building a catalog/database, non destructive editing, exporting, printing, creating photo books....etc. In LR you can add plugin programs from Nik Software, topaz labs, and others. Plus you can add in Elements and full Photoshop if wanted/needed.

Again, start with LR.

I would start with Lightroom since Photoshop is going to the cloud service and will require a monthly payment subscription. I imagine 3rd parties will start making all of their filters to be compatible with Lightroom, some are now but not all. By the way, the order of their products from least to most features and cost is Elements, Lightroom and then Photoshop.

Get lightroom. It is powerful, very easy to use and does most things that it sounds like you'll want to do.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

If you do want Photoshop, purchase CS6, it is still available, but not for long.

just a few of my thoughts...

Lightroom 5 was just released and I'm sure that it will be more than adequate for what you need.

Start with lightroom. Photoshop is really only for the more advanced users. Lightroom is easy, fast, and cheaper, and does much more to the entire process, especially for a beginner.

It's only robbery if you are forced to buy it. You are not. More and more photographers, after learning Lightroom, are making the calculation that even at its old price buying PSCS for use on only 2-5% of their shots is not an expense they can justify, not when there are other viable alternatives in the market. Adobe was faced with two choices; lower the price of PS to compete with the others (including their own PSE) or to raise the price, forget about amateurs and small-business photographers and concentrate on milking every penny from the power users, businesses that will buy the multi-user license.

Agree with those that recommended getting Lightroom. I have been a Photoshop CS user, and ever since getting Lightoom, I hardly use Photoshop anymore. Granted, there are things you can do in Photoshop that you can't do in Lightroom, but for many people, Lightroom is all they need.

Start with LR. It should meet 90% of your editing needs. If you need Layers and Masks, take a look at Perfect Photo Suite 7. PPS7 also comes with an Effects module with a ton of presets, a Portrait module that I like much better than Portrait Professional, a Black & White module, a Focus module, and a Resize module. With the Resize module you can upsize an picture with NO loss in quality. It is a very powerful program, relatively easy to use, and much cheaper than PhotoShop.

You can download a trial version of PPS7 at http://www.ononesoftware.com …MDax6juhrgCFcSj4AodJx8A3w (external link)
