SX40 Zoom Question

Why sometimes when I zoom does the camera zoom back out? This happens regardless of Auto or P modes.

Was at a function the other night, tried to zoom across the room. The camera did fine, seemed to focus and all of a sudden the lens zoomed back in. Took me a bit of fumbling etc to finally get it zoomed back out.

Just seems weird that the camera does that. Thanks for any advice/feedback.

I don't know since I've never had this happen with my camera.
