This is the first type of this hover fly I have ever seen in person so to speak. I did think first of all it was a bee... but it landed and stayed still. I knew then it couldn't be a bee
- I think it's Volucella Bombylans. If not, very closely related.
Cold or tired flesh flies will happily pose. Other times, they'll flee the minute you're within 3 or 4 ft.
