There is an interesting article and a couple of hundred comments at Photoshop pirating (external link). I do agree with the article that one of the reasons that Adobe went with creative cloud option only was to limit the number pirated or cracked versions of the software. I am surprised that it is available in cracked format already. One would think that a company with the brain trust that Adobe has would be able to stop this. I find the comments somewhat hilarious as they get into a philosophical argument over whether providing a cracked version is really pirating or not. The other main points the commentators are making is that those that use a cracked version wouldn't have bought the software in the first place so Adobe isn't out anything. I would love to see Adobe catch a few of these people that are providing them and those that are using the cracked versions and prosecute them to the maximum that the law allows for.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

On the other hand, Adobe gave away CS2! I've switched from PS7 to CS2, it cost me nothing and its an official Adobe gift with code number.

In effect they are acting as pirates with their own product.

It's just stupid how easy it is to get Ps to work "the wrong way".

Generally, people who pirate software would not have bought the software in the first place.

Secondly, why would Adobe prosecute piraters? You have an entire generation of kids who grew up on cracked Photoshop as the be-all, end-all for image processing. If they ever decide to go "pro" and pay for image editing software…it'll be Photoshop. It's the same reason Microsoft sells educational licenses for it's Office suite for pennies on the dollar, and gives away it's programming IDE software. When the students finally have money, they're going to buy what they learned on.

CC wasn't about stopping piracy, it was about creating a steady revenue stream. I'm in no way surprised to see a cracked version out, I expected it to get cracked within the first few days.

Less than 24 hours after it went live it was cracked.

I agree with Lowner, the fact that Adobe actually encouraged me via a live telephone call to download and use the free CS2 rather than grant me the upgrade license price I was asking for for PSCS6, as a decade long PAYING PS user... If losing customers to free software, pirated or otherwise was a priority,. why would they have pushed me to go the free route rather than sell me what I had come to them to buy?

This all happened a few short weeks before the announcement of the "Creative Cloud",

...Adobe lost me as a customer then,. Creative Cloud never even had the chance to be the nail in that coffin. It's funny though, that even then I made a comment about how I felt as if they were literally driving me towards piracy. The irony of course being the "Pirated" software I am now using instead of PSCS6 that I was trying to buy, was given to me by Adobe.

I am a little confused by the article, and wonder if it is not in error. It states that the crack task basically revolved around the initial install being verified online and re-authorization every 30 days, both of which would be easily circumvented.

I do not have CC. However, as I understand it, some of the new features in the new CS7 will not work in the offline mode, even in a legal version, and can only be accessed when online. Is this true? And if so, has the cracked model somehow managed to enable the new features offline?

It was never about pirating, abobe secretly enjoys it, if they wanted to stem pirates they'd stop allowing you to download for trial. pirating is the reason its so popular, because everyone can use it.

CC was about the fact that people were buying upgrades and as mentioned earlier creating a steady revenue stream. they can now just push out updates instead of marketing a whole now release.

There is no CS7.

That's fine, Dennis but I think you understood the gist of the question and this answer served no purpose.

So I'll reword it:

I am a little confused by the article, and wonder if it is not in error. It states that the crack task basically revolved around the initial install being verified online and re-authorization every 30 days, both of which would be easily circumvented.

I do not subscribe to CC. However, as I understand it, some of the new features in the version of photoshop that will follow the current version will not work in the offline mode, even in a legal version, and can only be accessed when online. Is this true? And if so, has the cracked model somehow managed to enable the new features offline?

I would guess that the online-only features are related to posting and sharing content to the Cloud and the Behance - who green-lighted that name? - sharing network. You can't post your crap or sync things to the cloud if you are not connected to the internet. You can use the application without internet connectivity, but you must connect periodically to have the software call home to the mothership to see if your subscription is paid up.

Kirk,

Thanks for your answer. I'll have to look into it. As to connecting every so often to verify the license, that is something that could be easily cracked.

What I am talking about is some of the new features. For example, I thought I read somewhere that the new Camera Movement Filter (if that is what it is called) will not work unless you are connected to the cloud. If that is true, then it would seem the functionality of that filter is connected to the server and would not work in local mode. Thanks.
