Recommendations on external Flash and some filters?

I would like to purchase my 1st external flash for my T3i, does anyone have any recommendation? Of course, cheaper the better until I start to become more familiar with it and in the future upgrade to it.

Also, any recommendations on filters as well? Again, not too expensive. I have read on some of the articles/posts, FAQs, etc.., but figured what others on similar boat as me have purchased.

I like the Canon 430 EXII. I've had it on my 450D and now use it on my 5DIII.

If you want cheaper however, you can look at the Yongnuo flashes.

As for filters, for CPL go with B+W, Marumi, or Hoya. Make sure you get multicoated.

UV filters, only get them for expensive lenses or ones that need one to complete the weather sealing. Don't bother for cheap lenses such as the 18-55 or 50/1.8.

Star filters, what are they and why do you need one?

I would have to agree. But if OP wants one...

The 430EX II is the best bang for your buck flash out there. Don't put a filter on your lens unless you have a particular need for it for a particular shot.

I would have to agree with the 430exII, or a used 580exII. I don't see the need for a star filter, I get stars just fine (more than i want most times) just by stopping the lens down. ;)
If stopping the lens down doesn't work for you just stretch some panty hose over the end. :)

Or you can add your starburst effect in PhotoShop and vary the amount of naffness -

I just picked up a YongNuo YN-468 II for my T4i. It seems to have a lot of features for the money. The build quality seems good too. I haven't had a chance to use it much, but I'm very satisfied with it so far. Much cheaper than the Canons as well.

Thank you everyone for contributing to the thread.

I ended up pulling the trigger (no pun intended) on Yongnuo RF-603 C3 2.4GHz Wireless Flash Trigger for Canon & Yongnuo YN-560 III Speedlite Flash with Built in 2.4Ghz trigger just to get more comfortable and to familiarize with Flash photography without breaking the bank. Hopefully I made not so terrible decision?! And, once I start to feel more comfortable, don't mind upgrading.

Once I receive the ordered items, would then need to familiarize myself how to sync up all 3 (including T3i) without looking much of a fool. :)

Ok. Star filter is out. :)
