My review of Don Zeck's Lens Cap

I got one of these for my 200L 2.0 that I recently purchased. I was quite worried that 200L did not have a lens cap and I bought this cap thinking It works like a regular lens cap.

My initial impressions with the lens cap was that it wouldn't stay on properly. It comes with these over sized "o-rings" that Don says you should use. There are 3 of them, using 3 of them makes it impossible for the cap to fit. Using 2 of them also does not work. Using 1 of them sort of works, but it requires a lot of force to put it on.

One another problem I had with the lens cap, and it was the main reason why I returned it, is the edges of the handle is extremely sharp. I ended up cutting my fingers after using the cap just for a few minutes.

I paid $60 for the cap and for $60, I was expecting a lot more. At least they could have made the handle part of the cap more user friendly (or should I say finger/hand friendly). Also, because the handle is made of very hard rubber, it doesn't fold and does not fit in your pockets. So the entire point of not using the cap thing that comes with the actual lens and using this cap to me was the ability to carry this cap around easily and I was hoping it would be more practical. I was wrong.

Now I am using what the lens came with and it's really not bad. I don't use that thing if I am going out with only 200L and the body, the hood is large and long enough to protect the front element. If I am going out with multiple lenses, then I use that big pouch thing and it's not a big deal really because when I don't need it, I can keep in my back pack.

You thought that the 200L that you purchased might not come with a cap????

It doesnt. It comes with a pouch thing. None of the telephoto primes come with a cap.

WOW.... that is kind of.... uhh.... crazy. I would think Canon would include some sort of cap no matter what.

For my 300 f2.8 IS lens, I only use the leather cap when I store the lens in its hard case. Otherwise, I found a "tupperware" type of lid that fits perfectly on the end of the lens (not the hood). The price was reasonable too.

The only drawback is that with the hood mounted, the cap will no longer fit on the lens and that's the one advantage the cap you bought and returned had. I don't feel I need a cap on the lens when I'm out in the field with the hood in place anyway.

I meant the big whites, the 5k+ primes. I m sure there is good reason for it.

I am wondering if you got the right size. I have Zecks for both my 300/2.8 IS and my 400/2.8 IS II. No problems with fit, was fine right out of the box. I don't think any lens cap in these sizes are going to fit in your pocket easily unless you are wearing a photo vest or something similar.

The lenscoat one gives some protection for the front element when the hood is reversed(some people also add plastic into it's insert pouch) while being easier than the leather one get on/off.

Your sarcasm is welcome, that being said, Sigma lens was one of those "to each his own" situations.

This lens cap is something else. I had one of my friends with me at the time of trying this for the first time, both him and my wife scratched their fingers (and I actually cut mine) using the cap. I don't know if you have seen one or owned one, but the plastic that is used is extremely well made (which is good, so it doesn't break). The disadvantage is the edges of the handle is very sharp and where the handle meets the actual cap (which is where it has these 4 circles) is the issue. Either I got a bad one or I don't know what else to make of this, I don't see how someone can use this unless their fingers are really small, because it's impossible to grab the handle without having your fingers make contact with the edges.

Anyways, I really don't want this to turn into a 14 page flame war, the Sigma thread was not my intention and I don't return everything I buy, heck I also bought a 200L and that I am keeping

I hate to say it but it looked cheaply designed and built in the video demo. I personally wouldn't have bought it just on that alone.

The DZ cap for my Canon 500 F4 fits perfectly, is so easy to get on and off, I didn't need to use the extra 'O' rings and I can get it in my pocket when I'm not using it.

I've just bought one for my 400mm f/4 DO and I love it. Fits perfectly, easy to fit and remove with lens hood on or off. The handle is absolutely fine, no sharp edges at all. I didn't need the extra O-rings as it just fits exactly as it should.
