I am in the market for a new landscape lens and am upgrading from my 18-135 kit lens on my 60D. The two lenses I am considering are the Samyang 14mm f/2.8 and the Canon 17-40L f/4. Let me know if you guys have any thoughts on which one to go for.

Thanks,
Nick

Neither. Both do best on FF.

On crop, my favourite landscape lens was my 10-22. If you don't want as wide, I suggest the 15-85. Both will be better than either the 14mm or the 17-40 on your 60D.

Highly recommended the 17-40mm for an all around wide zoom. On 60D it is not "Ultra wide" but it is wide angel to be sure, so I don't agree with Sirrith on that point.

But If you want wider, I agree that the 10-22 makes a lot more sense than the 14mm prime.

Canon 17-40 since you have versatility. When you are doing landscape, you dont need 2.8 and primes arnt that good for landscape because sometimes you might want a tighter shot.

Just another point re 17-40mm. this was the first wide angle zoom I purchased about 10 years ago, and I still have it today. It was fist used on a 1.6 crop 10D,. then for all these years on my 1D bodies starting from the first one through the 1D3..

Now I am still using it on my 1.6x crop IR camera, on my 1D3, and my FF 5D3.
It is fantastic on all three. In fact, I have special hoods for it to use on the Crop bodies.

The 17-40L is fantastic lens, but will not be a dramatic change on your aps-c focal length wise.. 17-40 is great landscape lens on FF, but that is another story. The 14mm seems to be good fun, but you may want to look in 12-24 or 10-22 territory instead..

Of the 2 you listed the 17-40 is much better choice.
It is a very nice lens and I use mine on my 1Diii with awesome results.

Were there strong indications that it was going to be announced before the end of the year 5 years ago? Frankly none of the current Canon wide angles are all that impressive. I have the 17-40 and 24-105, but bought a Zeiss 21mm to give me some WA image quality. Canon's recent binge of upgrading their lenses has turned out some good ones so far though, so hopefully the upcoming revamped wides will finally give Canon some strong entrants in that range.

+1. I agree 100%. I didn't realize the full potential of my 17-40 until i went full frame. Then I went a step further and got a Samyang 14mm which I love. On my 7D, the 15-85 was my walk around lens; the 10-22 the best for ultra wide.

Have you considered the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8? It's my preferred landscape lens, and rarely leaves my camera body while I'm out in the mountains. I know a lot of folks dont use 2.8's for landscapes, but disling it up to f/7 and still being able to hand hold is pretty great.

10-22mm for a crop IMO. I liked that lens more than my 17-40 when I had my T2i

I think for a crop the tokina 11-16 is the best landscape lens.

Also a solid choice.
