One of my 300D's just started doing something strange. The mirror is acting the opposite of normal. It's up all the time and comes down when you release the shutter. Obviously, this makes the camera totally useless.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Errrrmmmm....can you force the mirror back to the down position then try again? The same thing happened with one of my film cameras before...I just gently "forced" the mirror down, clicked it into the down position and it behaved normally afterward.

With a camera that old, it could be that something simply slipped out of place...and it can easily be corrected.

I've tried to force the mirror down but it won't catch. It just snaps back up.

That sucks...I don't know too much about the mechanical workings of these things...can you grab another XT and see if you can compare and see if - at least visually - you can notice anything that's not normal? I know, that's a very simplistic and long shot, but that's all I've got haha.

A 300d? Wow, how old is this thing?

Loved it when I had it many years back....

have you tried a reset and taken all the batteries out, just in case it says MLU is off but it thinks its on.
Cracking little cameras though - I only got rid of mine last year

It'old... very old! I actually have three. We use them underground in abandoned mines because they're inexpensive and rugged. Of the three, only one still works (the mines killed a 20D as well).

I've reset the camera and left the batteries out without any success. When it happened, I was able to fiddle with the camera and get it to work normally for one or two shots and then it reversed again. I've never seen anything like this on a SLR before.

Right on! I still use my old 300D as a time lapse camera for the similar reasons (if it dies or someone steals it). It continually surprises me how good the images are.

I wish I had an answer for you on the mirror, but I don't. Sorry.

BTW -- what kind of racing?

Just open track days. I have a tube chassis (fiberglass body) road racing car we run. Lots of fun!

I've reset the camera and left the batteries out without any success.

Just to clarify, by "batteries" do you mean you also removed the date/time battery? The correct procedure to do a reboot on the camera is to remove all the batteries, turn the power switch to ON, press the shutter a half dozen times (to bleed off any stored power), then turn the power to OFF, reinstall the batteries and test. If you have done the process correctly for a reboot then you will have to reset the date and time.

Additionally, if you think the date/time battery is pushing 4 to 5 years of age get a new one for the procedure above.

I've attached page 33 from the manual that shows you where the date/time battery is located. It appears it is a CR2016 battery which is commonly available at drug stores.

Duh! Good point! I totally forgot about the CR2016! I'll take a look at that tonight.

Thanks!

Pulling all the batteries didn't fix it. I forced the mirror down and ran the shutter and got it back in place but it reverses again after a few shots. Bummer.

Thanks for all the advice!
