Dance Rehearsal Candids ...

A month or two back I did a little project photographing in the rehearsals of a new show by the artistic director ... ended up with some really nice candids and an exhibition at the end of it. A choreographer saw the exhibition and asked that I come to some of his rehearsals, which worked for me. I had a lot less time as the show's about to go up so I was only in the last week of rehearsals but still got a few good candids, I think ...

Oh I like quite a bit of the shots! Why'd you pick B&W over color if I may ask? And what kind of dancing were they in for? Doesn't look like ballroom dancing to me .

I picked Black and White because the show itself has very colourful costumes, vibrant and bright, and in rehearsals, people are generally wearing plain coloured, casual, comfortable clothes that just look a bit lacklustre in the photos compared to what you usually see of the show ... black and white takes away this sensation, for me anyway.

I've put a few into colour for the theatre to use as they're currently promoting the black T-shirt that the dancers are wearing in #1, #3 and #5 - sometimes the photos look good in colour, but on a consistent basis I find that Black and White works better for rehearsals. I had the same feeling with my previous project - some photos looked fine in colour, but a lot of the time the lacklustre colours detracted from the image.

As for the type of dancing ... it's a real mixture actually, the show is based on West Side Story and the music has a strong Latin feel to it, Latin Jazz etc. and so dances such as the (spectacularly done) Cha-cha-cha feature but there are also contemporary and street/break dance elements incorporated at times, as well as acrobatics, as well as a couple of duets you might just about pass off in a ballroom ... a veritable smorgasbord.
