I've been reading on this post for some time. This is my first post. Basically I got myself brand new 6d with kit lens and a tele from Costco.
Just finished charging e battery and started to do some practice photos.
Either it is a quite morning or in my head, I feel the 6Dhas a noticeable motor noise when I press half way down the button. (compare to my old 50d)
I also tried it using both lens (24-105L and 70-300h) and the noise is the same.
Does it makes sense? This is my first full frame body.
Much appreciate for the help.

Surely what you are hearing are the IS motors in the various lenses...............AFAIK no Canon bodies have motors in them.

As for whether you heard it less using the 50D, well maybe the construction is different enough to absorb or transmit the noise less compared to the 6D???

PS To prove it is just the IS system turn it off on the lens and listen again with the shutter button half pressed ;)

That was a great meal ~ you must have a good set of pans :p

Probably IS, but could also be that the camera is in AI Servo AF mode. Try setting to One Shot AF mode.

Thank you all, BoxBrownie nailed it. So I guess my next question, if I plan to take these lens to the zoo with family, should I turn on the IS ? Thx

I can't imagine the IS motor bothering anyone, especially in a noisy zoo. Turn it on, it will help you to be able to handhold the camera at slower shutter speeds. That is unless you plan to use a tripod, in which case I would leave it off.

How can you be concerned about AF noise, but not about shutter noise, which is actually hearable?

The AF and IS motors are in the lens so it should sound the same on either camera. I have noticed no increase in Af or IS noise from my 50D to my 6D.

Why would you turn IS off?

Just out of morbid curiosity...why did you upgrade from the 50D to the 6D?

Ok perhaps another dumb question..pls forgive me.
But what application do I need to open video from the SD card on the computer. Although I have the 6D package...cd, etc but I wanted to test out all the features before I open the packages. ( in case I want to return it :-p )

As far as 50d to 6d. I wanted to move to the FF body. So far, the photos are not disappointing at all.
( I know, it maybe related to the L lens too but the indoor photos with auto mode is amazing )

Wait...you've got a million kids running around yelling and shouting in the zoo, and you are worried about the IS noise? Are you sure you are talking about the zoo and not about the symphony?

No, I'm not concern about the IS noise at zoo/ sea world . Rather I was un familiar with the sound of a we equipment. And the noise I detected was earlier in the morning before we head out for the trip. Thx for caring though.
Box Brownie once again thank you.

Process the images to web suitable sizes (max 1024pixels on the longest side) and either embed them on this forum of upload to Flickr and embed or post the links :)

Enjoy the trip and have a whale of a time :D
