Instead of dragging my shutter to catch the ambient lamp light,
I threw a 580 EXII speedlite in there with an orange gel to mimic
the ambient light, and used an Einstein with a 22in Beauty Dish
with a grid as the key light. That way I could use a fast shutter speed
and keep my image crisp.

Well done. I started working on this set up about three weeks ago using a Quadra head in the lamp shade and a gridded 27 inch SB. The light in the shade worked, but I couldn't get the main to work well. The gridded BD is spot on, isolates just right, the egg crate in the 27SB wasn't tight enough and the SB was to big.

Thanks for posting this image and the set up.

The only nit I would pick is seeing the back of her left hand instead of at an angle.

This is really good. How exactly did you position the 580EXII in there? I'm guessing you have a diffuser on it or are pointing it toward one side of the lamp or something?

Thanks.

So I use the Phottix Strato II triggers. So when the speed lite is upright attached to the receiver it forms an L shape. The thin wire or bar that holds the lamp shade to the lamp is where I hung the speed lite upside down. Make sense?

I'm curious as to how far out of frame you had the BD.

Thanks

Not that far. We had 3 models, 3 photographers, a make up artist, hairstylist and this model's mom (model is only 15) in the hotel room with us. So needless to say it was ram packed in that hotel room. The BD was probably a few inches outta the frame.
