This lady was with a couple of her friends at the coffee shop in the bookstore. The colors were great, but I'm sticking with my b&w kick.

Nice composition - has a good sense of action to it. The texture of the yarn makes for a pleasing b/w conversion IMO.

I would do something with the highlight area of her hands though. I like the way they look but their brightness gets lost somewhat in the bright background of her blouse. Either darken her fingers, or the background Nino for some subject isolation and you will make a good picture better ;).

Yes Nino - that is moving in the right direction. I believe you have achieved the proper tonality. Make her fingers too dark and it starts looking a bit unnatural. It's challenging in a situation like that, just using the available light at hand, but you spotted a good composition and made the most of it.

Very nice pic...I think that I would darken the background rather than her hands.

That's an interesting thought Mark - it could possibly work too.

Right now with the darker hand on the lighter background you have a sense of dimensionality. Your eye/mind sees some depth in the photo. If you flipped the tonality, as you suggest, I wonder how that would play with the 3-D effect.

Thanks all for the advice and compliments. I'll maybe try darkening the background (I'm assuming her shirt) just a tad instead of the entire exposure since I think I have nailed the rest of composition.

You are very welcome Nino - it's often very satisfying to see how a composition evolves through different viewpoints to the final interpretation of the maker :D.

And on a side note, it's also interesting just how many IT people seem to get involved in the nuts-and-bolts of photography. It was similar back in the wet darkroom days too ;).

I used to be an IT, so I guess that's why I can take the feedback that quickly. hahaha. As far as darkrooms go....All I need now are the chemicals :D

I actually approached them and asked if I could take some pics of their hands at work. We spoke for a bit and during the conversation, I snapped a few. Trying to keep all parties comfortable.
