Hello everyone. I was just wondering if anybody/everybody has a "standard ratio" crop that you apply to your photos when you are delivering them to your clients? For example, you make all your photos in a 5X7 or 4X6 ratio or do you just keep everything strait out of camera? I am just wondering because I am going to be delivering my first wedding and I am sure that the will be making "standard" print sizes which means they will be cropping my edited photos. Of course they can request certain sizes and I can edit them accordingly but I am delivering a CD and don't expect them to make their prints through me. Thanks for your time everyone.

I leave everything at 3:2 ratio like the camera gives me.

Leave at native 3:2

Cropping to lots of random sizes seems to be a common mistake that many new people shooting weddings make if some recent posts are anything to go by.

It would create real problems for anyone wanting to make a set of prints from the images and is a bad habit to get into.

Cropping too tightly is another common one as well which is something you learn not to do with experience as people order prints in different sizes. Group shots I always leave a reasonable amount of space around them as its common for these to be ordered in different ratios such as 7x5 8x6 10x8 etc.

Yes, all my print orders are cropped individually where needed.

3:2 for about 95% of photos. On occasions I do custom crop and that's only where I have a great photo which needs something eliminated from it to the side which I cannot photoshop out.

Yup - standard 3:2 here too. Cropping is done only when prints are ordered.

This ↑↑↑

95%+ are all 3:2 but I won't let a good photo go to waste out of fear of cropping it slightly differently, especially if it's an image that has a bit of 'wow' factor.

For weddings, 95% are 3:2. A few are 1:1. Print edits are either 4:5 or 3:2.

I've also been stitching photos = panoramas where appropriate. Beach scenes especially.

This does present a problem for those that provide nothing but a CD of images. Most customers don't understand why they lose part of an image when they go to print a 5x7 or 8X10. I don't provide a CD unless they pay dearly for it and in that case I will tailor a number of the better ones to print size for them and they know that they can always ask me to do others. My preference is to supply prints only after the wedding and have been quite successful at it. When I shoot I always try to leave that space so that each image can be cropped with relatively ease to any of the popular sizes.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

3:2 as well! Cropping takes time - only worth it if you are getting paid for your time (i.e. prints being ordered).

3:2

My disc of images is included in the packages. Most print shops will print a 12x18 as the format is becoming much more popular.

No client has ever complained.
