Worth it just to try??

Am wanting a play with a ND filter. Seen this & thought it may be worth a try. If I like then would move up to a good quality one. Needs to be 77mm to fit my intended lenses. 10-22 Canon & 24-105 Canon. Maybe even my 100-400 if I'm feeling brave.

I've tried that, and IMO, the wacky color tint is way screwy to correct. Plus, the OP is looking for a vari-nd.

I think for the 10 pounds, it's worth giving it a go. You'll either decide you love it, and want to upgrade, or that you don't use it enough to justify the cost of the upgrade. In either case, you're not out much, and you could probably resell it on eBay for 5 pounds. I've had one of those in my watch list (US ebay, $7) for over a year now. One of these days I'll pull the plug, but in the year, I have found I haven't 'needed' it, but it would have come in handy. Why have I been hesitant on the $7? Pure, unadulterated laziness.

If you get it, let us know how it does.

Let see... 10 Pounds.... $25 USA??? Cheap piece of crap to put in front of a $1000+ lens...... Maybe you need to be looking at a better one.

That's why I am spending £10 just to see if I like one first. If I do, a good one will follow..

What if it looks bad and you decide you don't want to play with ND filters, but really it was because it was a cheap and lousy one? Maybe if you got a good one, you wouldn't come to the same conclusion.

Scrum as you know I just got one and even though it is cheap a one I like it a lot.

Shot this around high noon with a really messed up settings used an ND4 filter and it came out great. (well I think so anyways)

Shutter 1/640, iso 500 and F/ 4.0. Without the filter I'm sure with those setting this picture would've been crap.

i've purchased piles of cheap nd filters on ebay. They are hit and miss. Sometimes you'll come across a real deal. But they are more often than not cheaply made. Often you'll get glass that fits very loosely within the ring. They come in handy for those very rare times you want a wide aperture and a long exposure. When that time comes, it's very handy. But again, it's rare.

Well, I'm not sure that an ND4 filter was really essential to that shot. You could have dropped ISO to around 100 and still used 1/640 or so and f/4. For that matter, by using a faster shutter speed, you could have used a stop or two wider aperture for shallower depth of field.

Could've should've would've. Lol.

For that shot I used my nifty 250 so I'm stuck at 4.0 at my widest. Yes I could've bring the iso down and use faster shutter speed but I still would've gotten some harsh glares of that paint. So regardless of my messws up setting by cutting down the harsh glare my $19.99 rocketdog ND filter did it's job.
