I agree with both freddy and Brad. Increasing shutter speed and aperture will help both freeze the action as well as increase the depth of field. A flash by itself will not help or change the focal plane; it's up to you to focus the camera on the part of the subject/bird you want to be in crisp focus. Takes practice, practice, practice and you'll get it. When you do we'll be waiting...... Steve
