I wanted to take a portrait of my father who turned 70 yesterday. The goal was to take a photo of him with no distractions; I learnt a tip from Glyn Dewis video online (http://www.youtube.com​/watch?v=FO9Zy8m3cxw (external link)). I think I nailed it!

I hadn't seen the Glyn Dewis video before, but after watching it I would say that you nailed the technique.
