Javascript (AJAX) reduces network transfers a lot, so I assume the CPU power needed is compensated with those savings. Javascript (jQuery) makes the whole user experience so much better, so it is pretty much essential to get all done.

That's a very good point. Short of rigorous testing this would be hard to quantify. Plus, there are so many other things going on, that short of a really JavaScript heavy site it might even be impossible to measure.
Time will tell .

Javascript normally don't costs too much, unless a site uses it for animation - with non-animated pages, it's normally the display that is the big power consumer anyway.

The "best" way for non-animated sites to consume much CPU power is to not supply size for photos and have the web browser render the page and then have to totally rerender as each individal image is retrieved because it has to recompute the layout every time the browser finally get to know the actual height/width of the images.

This is far and away the friendliest, most useful and most consistent forum of all the ones on the internet that I frequent. Well done and can't wait to use the new forum.

well i am looking forward to this. i had a simplemachines forum going for many years and had to change it so much to our needs so i know what the effort is in this project.

well done Pekka.

As a software engineer in a previous life, I can only imagine how many man hours have gone into this effort. Props to Pekka for giving us a shiny new home.

Just spotted this when looking for an android forum reader and wow, what a project!
Kudos for making your own, at work we have a team of two developers (me being the junior as it were) of what had relatively recently become the main planning,tracking and damn near everything bespoke intranet site for hundreds of our employees so I can understand just how mammoth a task this is.

I think what many people won't realise is that it's not just the coding, it's the planning, the later rewrites as the platform shifts and also the need to be a database and security expert rolled into one.

I'll admit that I'm a little skeptical on the 15 post per page limit and not having a quote button for each post. But knowing how much thought you have put into all other aspects of the new software, I'm sure this was well thought out and the decision was sound. Of course if I don't like it I'll scream like a 4 year old!

I can't wait to try it out!

I suppose that I can appreciate your desire to load more posts per page (I have my preference set to 50), however, I understand that 15 was chosen in the interest of fast page loading. I am confident that if a real benefit of more posts per page is identified sometime in the future that it could possibly be implemented.

With respect to your concern about quoting, my understanding is that it will have multiquote capability.

Some progress info:

Beta test phase one has been completed and thanks to a wonderful test crew AMASS has been come very close to release. When I have coded the remaining stuff, I'll place AMASS to its new server and invite a lot more members to check it out. I am a bit busy with my day job now, so the next phase will happen by realistic estimation in about 1 month.

With beta many things were improved, added and tuned: a "For Your Eyes Only" page with all personal account stuff, image upload tool was perfected, followed threads system tweaked and modified, graphical bugs corrected, typography improved, all sorts of migration help added like new posts page, lots of improved and added features done, autosave tested, autourls tested, notification system was made great, spelling errors and grammar corrected etc etc etc. Lots of bugs were found and fixed!

Most rewarding thing was that the test crew enjoyed the beta a lot, had fun and chatty time there! A very successful beta IMHO.

Those pesky auto-complete bugs, I am sure you typed for but it changed it to got.

I hate this computer, the keys are dark and I can't read the letters. I'm going to get stickers for each key,,,, or throw it against a wall. GAH!
