see it's been that long that I have forgotten.

Mark, I was just thinking the same thing, that it's been so long that I have forgotten half of it! But I'm sure it will all come back to us the moment we see AMASS again. :D

I'm sure we will, we will be like photographers with a new camera, testing out all the features and in a months time forgetting most of them

It will be fun to see what the new forum can do. I sure can agree that so many webpage design programs have so much stuff in them that there is no way anyone could ever figure out what it is all for.

Just looking at the code of the old forum, what I found interesting was the key words. The forum as of today (meta data keyword wise) is up to the following cameras, Canon 5d Mark II, 1d Mark III, 50d.....

AMASS is being coded single handedly by Pekka from scratch. I assure you that HE will know EXACTLY what everything is for.;)

Meta keywords are not used by search engines any more, but history is fun :)

Oh? Good to know...
(Might explain why one cannot find my own website when searching for my name... Google -> stupid...)

On this note:
Any planned timeframe for the release of AMASS?
(Obviously, plans can change...)

Most interesting. Read up on that and I can fully understand their reasoning behind that. I have looked at many websites that listed keywords that were real popular but not even remotely related to the website in question.

But..... I won't chase that rabbit on here. The original topic is interesting enough not to get sidetracked....

Guess it is actual content plus user response.

I think the basic culprit is that many pages do not really have any text content! If you do something like php's strip_tags($html_source) for the page source, you can see how much actual textual content there is.

IMHO the important thing is the content on the page and how it is marked up semantically. Use header tags instead of large font sizes on spans or divs, use img tags with direct urls instead of scripted (js or other) images, do links as a href and not javascript redirects, give divs ids or classes that describe their contents.

Other things that come to mind: use microformats where they should be used (AMASS uses hReview for review threads: http://microformats.org/wiki/hreview (external link)), avoid redirects, do not load the initial page content via AJAX...

Google I/O 2014 seemed to advocate use of http://schema.org/docs/gs.html (external link) so it is good to gradually start using those where applicable. I'll add http://schema.org/Review (external link) to AMASS when I have time.

In short: AMASS is ready. The next step is tweaking the upgrade procedure (that takes some days), then putting AMASS on the new server, inviting people to check it out: first the old beta team and mods, then many more, if not all.

Final beta should be a short one (no more than two weeks), no new features will be added to final beta and if all seems ok I'll put my time to further tweak slow parts of the upgrade procedure (slow task being 10 million image verifications). to make upgrade downtime as short as possible.

I would assume that you could precompute the information for all existing photos right now, and then just make a quick check if the images has been changed during the update procedure.

Doing mod tools took much more time than I thought, but they are really cool and canning spammers is so easy and fun that mods wish now that they could hit that button :) Overall, since the beta phase there are many changes done here and there, new features and better ways to do things.

Damn - we report all the new spammers and miss out on the actual fun of getting them evicted :(

One hates to think what would happen if we, mere members, had the ability to evict people. Our numbers would decline rapidly, I fear...
