I know this may sound silly and I read countless threads comparing the two but I have the option of doing a straight trade, giving up my 24-105 for a 24-70 f/4 from a local. I read the the price difference was one of the main factors people stuck with their 24-105 but price isn't a factor in this case. I've read the the 24-70 has marginally better IQ and less distortion at 24mm but that it is also soft at 50mm. Any advice would be appreciated :D

Worst case you could always sell the 24-70 f4, buy a brand new 24-105L and pocket a few hundred dollars. Need I say more :D?

I would, in fact that's what I'd love to do. I've been waiting for them to start putting the 24-70 f4 in kits just so I might be able to work trade plus a little cash. I hate to give up the extra 35mm on the long but I'd really like to get a shorter MFD for underwater as the 24-105 is just a bit to long to use behind a dome port. The f2.8 lacks IS for video and the zoom is backwards on the Tamron plus I don't know if I can trust the AF on 3rd for my fast action shooting like I can with Canon.

To bad I don't live in the bay area no more if you decide not to, although I might be heading past there next month after MotoGP to visit family.

I would. I would trade the loss of the long end for the sharpness and the lesser vignette/distortion on the wide end. But thats just me.

That's me too but I'm no fan of the 24-105L
