I used an X-Rite ColorChecker Passport to create Dual Illuminant profiles for all my cameras. In fact I created two versions of each DI profile using the X-Rite software and Adobe's DNG Profile Editor. Those profiles are set as the defaults in Lightroom and ACR and since each camera's sensor is custom profiled, I get accurate renditions when raw files are imported and I've never had the need to use Import presets of any kind.

I use colorchecker calibration profiles also (single illuminant), but always apply changes to a number of settings in the develop module.

I can see why you might not have the need to use an import preset, but I think you may be selling yourself short here. The colorchecker calibration profile only calibrates the colors. It does nothing to make an image "pop". Doesn't help you process your vision into the image, etc.

I love that I start out with accurate colors, but that doesn't stop me from using the rest of the tools in Lightroom or CS6 as necessary.

It will correct for distortion and vignetting.

It does way more than just that. You can remove or at least minimize CA and color fringing, do automatic corrections based on lens profiles (even create your own profiles for lenses which aren't included), and do them automatically or manually. It's really a neat panel to get comfortable with.

So I'm assuming if you move within lightroom, it moves it physically on the HDD as well? Or if you move the folder and update in lightroom, it keeps your changes to he photos?

Yes to both.
If you move an image or folder in LR it remembers their new location and keeps the processing - and they are moved on the disk.
If you move them using the OS or another piece of software then LR will not know where they are but will still have the processing. You then have to show LR where the files/folder now are and it "reconnects" the orphaned processing with the moved files.

The end result is the same and it makes little difference which you use if just moving one folder or a couple of image files. However, if you are doing a major reorganisation by moving hundreds or thousands of files around then it will very time consuming to reconnect them in LR - much better to move them from within LR.

Excellent. So you are jus pointing the program to the files in their respective directory. Thanks a bunch.

I stumble on this in LR the other day where I move my files in explorer and LR shows up with a ?. Although LR will show it cannot find the photo or says the file is missing, you can right click the "?" and it will give you an option to find the photo in which you may search which directory where you currently changed to and reapply the settings. You will not lose anything. I am using LR4 if that helps.

Correct--you can't really ruin anything in Lightroom, you can just confuse the computer (or Lightroom for that matter) quite a bit. You just have to make sure you patch up your boo-boos as you go before you let them pile up to a mess.

Any more ideas of what changes you make to photos?

You can make your own presets or get some from here:

At minimum, I do this:

  1. Lens Correction
  2. White Balance
  3. Exposure
  4. Crop & Straighten
  5. Noise Reduction
  6. Sharepening

Of course, I try to avoid white balance, crop/straighten and exposure work by getting it right during capture.
