Suet still flying out the window. literally! New additions to the deck , and little ones( the size of their parents!) are learning the fine art of finding food.

Beautiful collection with amazing variety Gail! I now see why your seed bill is so high :)
I see the Starling has learned his place, at least in this picture ;), and Mr. & Mrs. Hairy have been busy. Love the Crossbill, but help me with the little yellow one in #7; and how's your suet recipe holding up to the critics?

Steve, the suet holds pretty well. The first batch was much more solid than this second batch, but for the price of putting it out, I am okay. The yellow is a Wilson's Warbler, but a very strange one. Constantly bumping into the glass window, almost like it was hunting for bugs, but I can't see any? It has been doing this for over a week now.

The dastardly starlings are still a pest, but as the young ones are getting older, they are visiting less often. Won't miss this:

Rex, nothing to do with me, this crossbill has a female as well, but she hasn't been around the last few days. Last one I had here was about two years ago, and he was all brown.

My gosh, Gail, what happened to that post?!? Hee, hee. Yeah, I saw that earlier post. Great set of shots-nice variety. Glad I don't(so far) have that starling problem! Curious about that suet recipe-do you have a link for it? I am able to buy 10 pak at local Tractor Supply Co. store for $9.90-everyday. Does your plan recipe improve on that? Just asking.

Great variety, Gail! I regrettably have the adult starlings showing their young where to get an easy meal too.

My starlings are charming when compared to the grackles who can suck a feed tube dry in less than a day. That is...if I didn't continually clap them away. It's funny...it seems that all my other visitors know that my clapping outbursts aren't intended for them so they stick around while the black hoard flies off, regroups, and attempts to gobble again.

Wonderful series of feeder images.

The suet here is about 2 bucks for a single! It goes within half a day or less depending on the crowd of starlings. I make 25 cakes for about 12 bucks. They are thinner, but thats ok.the recipe is easy

1 C lard( I use veggie lard, Crisco)
1 C Peanut butter
1 C whole wheat flour
2.5 C cornmeal
2 C quick Oats
1 C sunflower seeds
I had a bag of Vegetarian dog food from having fostered small dogs( I never used it for them), so I also added 1 C of the small pellets. Why they make a veggie food for dogs is beyond me..guess they can have allergies to meat? I freeze the mix in individual freezer bags the size of the suet cage, laying flat.

Ian, it drives me crazy, lol.I get the easy free food aspect, but there are hundreds just aorund the corner from me that thrive on the seeds from cow paddies:rolleyes:

Kevan I have been clapping my hands for over 20 years now, lol! First it was to keep the ravens away from my hens, and now its the freakin starlings, and you are right about the others knowing the clap isn't for them! The woodpeckers all know to stay put. Funny how they get used to that human interaction.
