OK - "Hole in the Rock Road" just outside of Escalante, Ut. Was kinna rushing to get back to a paved road, as the rains/storms were coming in fast.... This place is in the middle of NOWHERE and you really don't want to be on this road during/after a rainstorm!! Had a little too much water that afternoon, so I stopped to relieve myself alongside the road. It was so quiet - just the wind, and even that sounded like it was whispering...... then ..... BAM !!! A lightening bolt hit on the rise just North of me... There was NO delay from strike to thunder - it was immediate, and deafening! Now, I'm not going to tell you that it was like peeing on an electric fence, cuz it wasn't anywhere near that, but ...... I did jump about 4 feet straight in the air ! All I wanted to do was get the hell out of there.... right after I took a picture.

If you'll look on the face of the bluff to the left of the photograph, you can see where the bolt hit a tree and lit it up... A small smoke trail gives it away. It's almost 1/2way up the photograph on the lighter bluff.. The rains were just starting over there, so there was no chance of a fire, but - damn!! I laughed all the way out to the highway......

There's nothing more exciting than to be shot at............... and missed! ... Then, you're alive like you've never been before..

Only one question, did you end up peeing all over your pants and feet haha Nice shot though.

You are lucky to be alive... my high school science teacher once told me, if you feel your hair start to stand on end, dive to the ground, its the brief moment when lightning is deciding what to hit. I don't know if its true and if you can act fast enough, but its a good thing that tree was taller than you!

Great colours!

Not to hijack the thread, but here's a rescue from a 1981 contact sheet, showing a very scared me after a lightning strike just 30 yards away, 3000ft up a hill in Glencoe.

Interesting hair 'halo'.

My friend Bob, who took the picture, now mocks me for being so vain as to pose; I point out he was four feet higher, and had a metal Nikon FM clamped to his face . . .
