I spent a few days in Alaska and came back with a few photos. Attached are a couple of brown bear (grizzly) shots I took alone the Chilkoot River.

Comments and suggestions are welcome.

Julius

Nice shots! The first one is really amazing! I would not want to be a tourist standing there when this guy walked up!

Thanks for the comments, everyone. I shot these with my 100-400 on a 50D. Actually, the bear by the interpretive signs got agitated just after I took that photo. Someone with a small dog barking out of an open car window came along--the bruin trotted towards that car, and even though the driver backed up, the bear went to the vehicle's rear and slapped the side panel. Left a nice impression, and I am not sure how you would explain that to your insurance company...

Most of them are basically harmless. ;)
I hate little yappy dogs too and would probably go lay the boots to the car too!!!!

Been to Alaska many times and have had more than my fair share of close encounters of the bruin kind. Have had them sniffing at my tent in the middle of the night, been woofed at and bluff charged more than once and come face to face with a 1000# sow at 10 feet!!!!!! And lived to talk about it. :D

Frankly, I have hunted bear in the past with a rifle, then turned to a camera instead. While most bear encounters are indeed harmless, I am also not a fool and know that an agitated bear is anything but. As a former coroner here in the north, I have seen up close what kind of damage a bear can do. Best to stay out of the way and give bears the respect they deserve.
