If I want to remove and clean everything off my D drive HD, and put it all on a external HD , How do I get LR to then find it, if it inially has all been linked from inside LR to D internal drive.

Move the original files to another drive within Lightroom. Alternatively, you can move your files outside of Lightroom, then open a file in the root of your folder structure and point LR to the new location when prompted.

It is best to do it from within LR. If the external drive already shows up in the Folders panel, just drag the photo folders to it. If it doesn't appear, create your parent photos folder on it and then import a photo file to it. It can be anything, you can delete it if you wish later. The new drive and the parent folder will now appear on the panel and you can drag folders to it.
