Strange behavior downloading files from camera

I'm away from home and am having a strange problem. I've got both my cameras with me (T4i and XSi), and both are acting identically. My hunch is that there's an issue with a windows driver, but wondered if anyone has seen this before.

I'm using a borrowed laptop which is running Win XP, and the built in card reader doesn't work so I'm downloading files from the cameras with the USB cable. I was shooting Raw + JPG today, but when I download the files from the camera there appears to be 2 jpg files on the hard drive with the same name. I installed Canon DPP on this laptop, and it's not seeing the raw files in the directory I downloaded to either.

After I discovered this issue I did a few shots with both cameras set to raw only, and those raw files come across ok.

Windows is lacking a codec to recognize Canon's RAW files properly. When you are downloading, it sees the preview jpeg inside the RAW, and uses that instead.
Canon has software for this on their website. Or try installing EOS Utility and download through that instead.
Even better, shoot RAW and let DPP batch convert them to jpegs. It will do it better than the camera can do.

Can you see a diference in file size ?
Raw files are much bigger than the jpg files.

You can try the Microsoft codec for better results.

apersson850, would not the fact that...

tend to rule out the codec issue?

I've never installed the codec (which is available here http://software.canon-europe.com/software/0039964.asp (external link)) and my DPP sees RAW (and jpeg) without issue. One would think that the DPP installation would check for the presence of the codec (if needed) and then install it.

I've never had this problem myself, but from what I've heard, Windows gets confused when there are both jpegs and raws in the same folder.

There is a thread over at https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=976265 where an individual had similar problems and the cause was an old version of DPP. The full version of DPP, not just the update version can now be downloaded but either might be worthwhile to insure you are using the latest, which I think is 3.13.0.1

I essentially do what the OP is doing and the RAW + JPEGS do end up in the same folder on my hard drive as confirmed using Windows Explorer, not just viewing in DPP.

First off I do have the latest version of DPP installed, I just updated it from the Canon website last week. I can't believe that has anything to do with this problem, it shouldn't come into play simply copying files from the camera into a folder.

The file sizes are identical for the two copies of each jpg that's come over.

edit to add:
I'm using Windows Explorer to download the files from the cameras. When there's a RAW + JPG with the same name it thinks there are two JPG's on the camera, and it downloads 2 copies of the jpg. When there's only the raw file it sees the proper .CR2 extension and copies it properly.

I downloaded EOS Utilities and that works. I would have preferred doing it through Windows Explorer, but at least I've got all my raw files on the hard drive where I need them.

I had a specific reason to shoot Raw + Jpg. Normally I shoot raw only.

The codec files installation routine are at http://www.usa.canon.com …/canon_raw_codec_software (external link). I suggest you install them.

I'm suspucious that until Windows Explorer has the ability to recognize the CR2 extension, and this ability is acquired via the codec, then Windows Explorer only "sees" the first part of the filename. Since it "sees" two files with the same name, even though a different extension, it only pulls the jpeg over. Since EOS Utilities doesn't utilize the codec, that might be why it works. So we are back to the original suggestion by apersson850, "Windows is lacking a codec to recognize Canon's RAW files properly" and the resolution is likely install the codec.

Eos Utility is what you need to download from the camera, regardless of whatever software you use to process the images afterwards.

Being somewhat of a geek, even though I had successfully downloaded my files with EOS Utility I had to try installing the raw codec from Canon to see if that solved the problem. Turns out that it didn't make a difference. I can still connect to either camera via the usb cable and Windows Explorer only shows a .CR2 file for those images that were taken as RAW ONLY. For those that were taken as RAW + JPG it shows two jpgs with identical names and file sizes.

You might go to this thread https://photography-on-the.net …hread.php?t=840992&page=2 and check the stuff at the bottom of page 2. At lesst that individual hsd s similar issue with a 7D and it was resolved.
