So I was just thumbing through various old rumor threads and I cam across an idea that someone kicked around

what if Canon is aiming to do to the 24-70 range the same thing it did to the 70-200 range?

That is: 70-200 F4, 70-200 f4IS, 70-200 f2.8, and 70-200 f2.8 IS (now the II version)
We have the 24-70 f2.8, 24-70 f4IS, and rumoured/wished for/often mocked by people who think IS is useless in so many situations 24-70 f2.8 IS.

Of course the 24-70 2.8 turned to the version II....
and many othes think the 24-105 f4 IS found a reincarnation the 24-70 f4IS

but it was definitely interesting as an idea.

the potential pricing on one hand has me a bit nervous
but does anyone remember the timing of the releases and the relative initial prices of the 70-200 series? Did they all come out "at once" or did they come out all willy nilly (i just love that phrase)?

just wasting time thinking of crap....
join in if you will....

It's not the first time this idea has been floated, but I think it's actually a good one. If Canon agrees though, they give absolutely no indication of it.

Like you, I shudder to think of the pricing on a 24-70/2.8 IS from Canon...

FWIW, the 70-200s came out one at a time, 2.8 -> 4 -> 2.8 IS -> 4 IS (-> 2.8 IS II), if I remember correctly.

just as a followup
about the 70-200s
f2.8 - march 1995
f4 - september 1999
f2.8 IS - sept 2001
f4 IS - november 2006
f2.8 IS II - april 2010

so in a period spanning approx 8.5 years from the 2.8 IS and the 2.8 IS II
and 5 years from the 2.8 IS to the 4 IS.

if they bring out these various 24-70s - I hope they don't keep the same time line!

The original 24-70 2.8 came out after the 70-200 2.8 IS I.

For whatever reason, Canon has opted to leave IS out of the 24-70 2.8 MKII AND the 24-70 2.8 MKI. Unless someone here works for Canon, we can only speculate as to why IS was not included in these two lenses, when they seem to be shoving it into everything else. (including the 24-70 F4 IS).

No complaints on my end though. They did a fantastic job on the 24-70II, and I trust that it was the right decision in terms of optimizing for IQ, size, and price.

I do think, the 24-70 IS still comes in the next 2 years.

I can only imagine it would be BIG, and HEAVY.
(Like the 70-200 IS II)

Likely about the same as the original (Brick) 24-70/2.8L. IS doesn't add that much weight.

- ~ 8oz difference between the 70-200/2.8 USM and 70-200/2.8 IS USM.
- ~ 2oz difference between the 70-200/4 USM and 70-200/4 IS USM

Add 8oz onto the 24-70/2.8L II, and you're just ~2-3 oz heavier than the original...if that.

I would love a 24-70 with IS, but the price is going to kill it for me. With the MKII at $2300, one would expect a $2,800 for a version with IS.

Interesting, but it could be a tough sell if Sigma pulls through with a 24-70 f/2.0 with the same image quality as the current Canon 24-70 Mk II. Going on their recent lenses, they just might be able to...

All I know is that once the IS comes out the version 1 will drop in price and I'll be able to swoop up on one.
