Other's have pointed out that while the 70D has what appears to be the same AF sensor (number of AF points) it's lacking a couple of modes that are useful for some subjects.

It is also, as far as can be determined, lacking the dedicated AF processor that the 7D uses for superb AF performance.

very interesting .....Thanks everyone , the confusion continues. One more question ....Is 60D good and similar to 70D ?

They are all good and the differences between models in reality is quite small. With that said, the 60D has one thing going for it, it's cost. It can be had for something like 1/2 the 7D or 70D. However, it's missing some features which the other two have. The importance of those features is a personal decision. For me there is one feature I will never be without again, micro-focus adjust but that's me. Your best bet is to look at the feature set side by side and make the determination if the additional features are worth it to you. Whichever you choose, the final image will be the same or just about so.

Why would you choose the 7D over the 70D for things that move? I will be shooting motocross and looking for something to capture the image good. I might be doing some video though. Thats why I have been considering the 70D.

Because the 7D gets a slightly higher framerate, but more importantly, it has a couple of incredibly useful extra autofocus modes that are particularly good for shooting things that move: expanded point mode and spot focus mode (the latter is useful mostly for tracking relatively small subjects with precision, but assumes you're capable of keeping the point on the subject).

This suggests otherwise...

a few people on CR, who own 7D and 70D, commented on their differences and mentioned that hit rate with 70D is a lot better (since 7D's AI Servo was not always up to the task in more dynamic sports regarding focus lock) and the overall image quality is (a lot) better with the 70D as well, through out the whole ISO range. the latter, i believe it since we have dpreview and real images for comparison. regarding the AF, i cannot say.

But lets just keep assuming that there's no way the newer piece of technology could possibly be as good as the 4 year old camera...

Okay since the 70D is being compared to the 7D so much, whats the shutter life rated at. The 7D is rated at 150,000 clicks, anybody heard or read on what the 70D is rated at?

Aces, what exactly does that mean? After 150,000 photos taken, it has a failure rate? Can it be replaced? And is that costly or better to just buy a new one...

It means that the 7D shutter mechanism was designed to last on average for 150,000 clicks. Some might last 135,000, some might last 190,000. The 7D has a shutter life expectancy of 150,000 clicks, the 60D was a 100,000, just wondering if anybody has read or heard what the 70D is rated at. Im sure it can be replaced, not sure on the cost or anything. I imagine by the time a shutter is dead, its easier and better just to buy a new body.

I picked up my 7D on Spet 30 2009 and have loved it every day. Last Tuesday I received my 70D and its very nice. The touch screen is VERY nice :) Anytime I use a tripod I use LV and there is no comparison between the two, the 70D is hands down the better camera in LV. If you shoot jpg then the 70D is better then the 7D, with ME, HDR and "Multi Shot Noise Reduction" and a kickass jpg engine.

Did I mention the touch screen, its awesome. I find myself using it more and more. It makes the Q button much nicer to use.

The buffer is smaller then the 7D, I could get 28 frames with the 7D and 18 with the 70D with FAST cards. The 7D cleared the buffer in a little over 6 sec with the 70 at a bit over 9 sec.
I cant tell the difference between the two at focus speed but the 70D seems to have a bit better hit rate(not tested).

The shutter on the 70D is rated at 100k

The 7D has a handy feature when using Canon macro lenses in AI Servo. I can't remember quite how it works but in essence the auto focus speeds up by a factor of 3 when doing macro work. Does anyone know if the 70D has the same feature? I don't remember anyone saying whether it does or not.

AI Servo is standard and it's for any focus mode. It's for when your subject or you are moving back and forth it will track the focus

Thnks bud! 100K shutter life ishnt bad at all.

Yeah i have to agree, the buffer is way smaller on the 70D. My 7D i could knock out right around 20-25 shots in burst. my 70d im at around 10 in RAW and thats with a 95mbps SD card.

I've been reading on other forums from people who shoot both 7D and 70D who say the 70D is much better in accuracy and speed with the modes it does have.

I value reports from actual users over people who like to base everything on spec sheets.

The vast majority of 7D users I have ever known and shot with don't use the two extra modes, so it could be argued that the 70D is just a better AF machine for a large percentage of its users. I've definitely read a lot of complaints about the 7D not having good accuracy despite all the fancy bells and whistle configurations.

This is not from a discussion, but Roger Cicala's (Lensrentals) article actually mostly confirms it.
