A couple things I noticed on the Canon USA site: there is no mention of MFA and it doesn't appear ISO is selectable by 1/3 steps. Of course, it's only been up for a few hours so this might not be the final specifications.

ISO can be expanded to H: 25600
During Movie shooting: Auto (100-6400), 100-6400 (in 1/3-stop or whole stop increments) ISO can be expanded to H: 12800

Canon really screwed up on this 70D. People just aren't whinning about this one like the last how many bodies that have been released. What are they thinking?

Yup, it's that 4 or 5 year-old dedicated processor that's responsible for the AF that still beats any Canon camera without such a processor.

It's the same as PCs. No matter how fast CPUs get you'll still want a dedicated graphics processor (or two) if you want top performance.

Did the 1d2 have a dedicated processor? I cant remember. people LOVE the 1d2 AF.

Part of me wonders if Canon could put the 1D4 AF system into the 7D2 though too, since they seemed to have killed the APS-H line. That would be pretty nice, without cannibalizing the 5D3 or 1DX sales. That would make for a good AF point spread across the frame! :)

That is what I have been saying and hoping. 1d4 AF system in 7d2

Probably not. :)

My recollection is that the 6D was slammed due to it's relatively weak AF specs (esp. compared to the 5D III). Reference the below thread on the 6D announcement, where the bashing started early and often. IMHO if they had given the 6D a 7D-style AF (i.e. at least some outer cross-type sensors) most of this criticism would have been muted.
.

Actually the 6d AF system is rather good for a 9 point system. I have friends who use it for wildlife and have no problems.

What I think they did on the 70D is turned the Mfn button into a dedicated functional button, ie. removed functionality. ;)

It's fine with me, I don't use that button for anything other than to change the AF mode. I also no longer change AF drive mode from One shot to AI servo, I turned the DOF previous button into a temporary one-shot button. This way I have AI servo on all the time, and temporarily switch to one shot by holding down that button when in portrait mode.

Configuration is key, this is a great method to beholden a camera to any given user, the more features, "gimmicks", and configuration you give the end user, the more likely they are to love the product.

YUP. that is one of the things the 7d definitely has a big advantage over the 70 still. I do the same setup as you (DOF button is ONE SHOT) no more fumbling around.

Honestly I cant believe people didnt know about the MFN+ back button doing AF modes. I havent used the q button once on my 7d.

I seriously doubt they'll be changing specs this late in the game.

Try the European Site (external link) - it seems to have more info. Including, under the 'Specifications' tab, confirmation of AFMA and 1/3 stop ISO control.

Preordered on amazon.com. Release date of August 15.

And if Canon stays true to their current "reliability" on getting "released" cameras actually in the customer's hands, you might see yours by Thanksgiving! ;)
But honestly, who cares?
I want one....and I am shooting a D7100...
The ONLY thing holding me back is the REALLY lacking video features(frame rates of max 30fps @1080P...really? Sony and Nikon have been doing 60p for a while now...come on Canon!)

Okay. rant over. waiting on pics FROM this new bad boy!

Cheers!

I dunno why, but changing the various AF modes on the 7D has always been a blind spot for me. Perhaps it's from the trauma of having to read the manual on the very first outing with it, because I couldn't find how to switch to AF + Expansion mode.

This is NOT a step down the path they were stuck in the last 2-3 years releasing 18Mp variants of the same camera...
This IS giving new customers, current xxD owners, and even 7D owners MORE than anything else they've released recently...(disregarding the higher end models, obviously..)
so how is this a screw up?

there always has to be one... lol

That's right. Everyone shoots differently, so having a highly customizable piece of equipment has advantages.

I like having my MFn button set to the built-in Level. Helps a lot after a few beers! :p

I would use the Q screen more if I had a touch screen.

Agree with you there. The initial setup was a bit confusing.

You might try setting one of the other AF modes onto one of the Custom mode dial positions. Just spin the dial and you're in another AF mode, no button presses needed.

The swivel screen is very handy for LV photos and video, especially conditions where you just can't get your head directly behind the eyepiece comfortably (or at all).

The screen on my T3i looks just as good as when I bought it. If you are concerned about snapping off the screen due to abuse, you might want to also be careful of that cylindrical thing mounted to the front with those round pieces of glass within - I hear that can be damaged by abuse too.

And if you don't want to use it, and you are truly paranoid about dust and dirt: if you buy a camera with a swivel screen, then stow the screen (outwards, I presume), get some black caulking and seal it up permanently. Now it is just what you want.

Apologies for the sarcasm, but I really don't understand people who say "I wouldn't use that, so it shouldn't be a feature on the device, I don't care if other people would use it." Just don't use it! My camera bodies have various modes, some advanced, some not, that I have chosen to either not use or haven't explored yet. Our cameras come with CA and Green Box modes, and I bet you don't use them.

IMHO, YMMV, obviously,

shinksma

Don't apologize. Good post.
