The swivel screen is very handy for LV photos and video, especially conditions where you just can't get your head directly behind the eyepiece comfortably (or at all).
The screen on my T3i looks just as good as when I bought it. If you are concerned about snapping off the screen due to abuse, you might want to also be careful of that cylindrical thing mounted to the front with those round pieces of glass within - I hear that can be damaged by abuse too.
And if you don't want to use it, and you are truly paranoid about dust and dirt: if you buy a camera with a swivel screen, then stow the screen (outwards, I presume), get some black caulking and seal it up permanently. Now it is just what you want.

Apologies for the sarcasm, but I really don't understand people who say "I wouldn't use that, so it shouldn't be a feature on the device, I don't care if other people would use it." Just don't use it! My camera bodies have various modes, some advanced, some not, that I have chosen to either not use or haven't explored yet. Our cameras come with CA and Green Box modes, and I bet you don't use them.
IMHO, YMMV, obviously,

Well, I still think that it's the weakest link of the camera and it also kills a bit of the looks of the camera imo. I simply don't fully trust the durability of it (even though I'm very careful with my camera related stuff). But the fact that it's the weakest link and that it can get damaged easier than the other camera parts, gives me a somewhat unpleasant feeling.
Indeed, I don't use CA and green box modes. However I did use such modes exclusively on my previous camera (Powershot A40), but made sure I had enough knowledge before buying my 550D so I could totally ignore these modes.
And why shouldn't I have the right to prefer a fixed screen instead of a swivel screen? I gave you my, in my opinion valid, reasons. You can also look at it the other way around. Because you and some other people want a swivel screen, Canon should ignore the people who want a fixed screen? Hell, using a fixed screen would even make the camera cheaper.
