With today's sensors perhaps the 70-200 f4 IS would be something to consider -- much lighter, said to be sharper than a sushi knife, and also excellent IS -- with an L build.

It certainly is a substantially more compact lens Dave. I've never used it myself but see a lot of folks here being very happy with it. I've used that extra stop of the 2.8 on the larger lens to good advantage under really poor lighting, but I agree that today's sensors are leveling the playing field a bit more.

However you can still get some great background isolation with that f/2.8. The f/4 is no slouch, but you can see the difference ;).

based on what I have seen of the quality of good and best lenses, I know the lens being the tool that focuses the light and controls the actual light that enters the sensor, a best lens will always add far more to the quality of the image than an improved sensor would to the overall quality.

If were rich I would buy the best lens and best sensor, which may or may not be full frame.

In reality, the best lenses I always choose, assuming I am using a crop cam, before i chose the camera!

If I buy the 70-200mm f2.8 L IS II USM, its because I plan to shoot sports and wild life, the 70D for its size and weight appears superior to its predecessors for its size and weight, the EF 70-200mm f2.8 L IS II USM as heavy as it is, (and I can imaging) wont be a huge problem if I am taking sports and wild life pics in a secure location.

I like to see the athletic bodies of sports men and women at work, and i wopuld love to have my own RAW pics of such event for my own, my fav sports being FootBall (Soccer, I will never Call Football, Soccer) Sprint Running, and any sport that shows off the toned bodies of Male and Female athletes!!!

I understand what you're saying, but some of those "best" longer lenses are quite heavy, even more so than the camera. It's just something to keep in mind when looking at the whole picture of ergonomics and ease of use.

I'm not sure what kind of wildlife you are shooting but 200mm may be short in many cases -- depends I suppose on how close you are -- many posts on this list talk about 70-300L or 100-400L and even then being short. Something else to consider I suppose. But this is a 70D thread, so to tie that in, you'll get the benefit of the crop factor for sure.

Well, you do know that the EF 70-200mm F/2.8L IS II USM (1490gr) almost weighs twice as much as the 70D (755gr), do you? My guess is the combination will be quite unbalanced (front-heavy). If you don't necessarily need F/2.8, I would advise you to take a look at the EF 70-200mm F/4L IS USM (760gr). However like dnauer already pointed out, 200mm could be a bit on the short side for wildlife...

Come on, the guy is a hero. Pure entertainment :) ... guy is whining... well praising about 50gram difference between 70D and 7D. Lets say about 90% of his messages ( I really havent count them) :) But then again, he wants 70-200 mkII. And nice thing is, this guy telling like a most experienced photographer ever about these things. Even thou he have never hold those cameras in his hands, and even he have never shoot a single photograph with DSLR.

I think this might be Jim Carrey ****ing all of us around here ;)

Yeah, but now that his thread is closed, he's spilling over into others...

It's okay, it's kind of fun.

Well, he wasn't that great when it came to photography but he knows how to go out with a bang.

Could the local authorities make sure nobody is selling any weapons to this guy please.

Don't worry, it'll take him a few years to figure out what he wants as future weapons may weigh less.

Now I absolutely HAVE to get this camera! Those last few posts by Zim really sold me on it. Great stuff; weird, wild, wacky stuff.
