hmm, I got an email from Adorama at 12:41am July 2nd. Placed an order 20 min. later. I figured *shoot* first and ask questions later. :)

We both ordered from the same place. B&h is slower on the shipping.

I did just about the exact same thing, but only on the morning of July 3rd. I shot twice before asking any questions. My 2nd shot was to Adorama's Used Sales, requesting shipping tags for My 50D for I believed it was to be released SOON. I had done this type of thing before and knew I would get a quick call back. Sure enough the next morning 7-4-13, they called. That was the "source" of my now very wrong info about July 21st release. Anyways, the rep told me that there were only 62 ordered at that time and "that was absolutely nothing of what they anticipated on the preorder."

So both of us are in that early 62 only you are closer to #1 than I!

I paid the extra $4 for overnight shipping from amazon. Hoping mine is in the first batch and will be here by 9/16!

Same here! I pre-ordered on July 1, when they still had an August 15th release date so I was hoping for an August 16th delivery. I'll settle for September 16th if I have to, though. ;) (Although it still strikes me as weird that the release day of Sept 15th is a Sunday?? Maybe I'm just too used to the standard book/movie/music Tuesday releases.)

Meg, Canon's internal release is September 13th.

I just processed a few DPR 70D RAW files in LR5, which supports it.

High ISO is no worse than any other current crop camera, but the low ISO dynamic range has not been improved much (although some) for those who care about that. Good news is that I see zero pattern noise in the shadows. Chroma noise is just barely better on the 70D at ISO 6400 than the 60D. Going to a FF 6D is where the money is at for low noise at high ISO. :D

Overall, it looks like Canon figured dual pixel AF was more important than any significant performance increases in the other areas.

If they did make that trade-off, it was because they determined improved AF during video would result in more camera sales than increasing DR at low ISO. Personally, I think this assessment of the market is probably correct.

Do the 70D raws have better IQ than a 7D? I'm about to buy a 7D (dedicated birding body), but I'd consider the 70D if the IQ is superior.

Hey guys, can someone explain to me this:

Canon EOS 70D Canon EOS 7D Nikon D7100
AF in live view • Phase detection • Contrast detection • Contrast detection

Is Phase better?

What is Contrast?

Finally I was seeing reports where it's comparable or better than the 6D in *some* aspects. If that's the case, it's definitely a wise choice to get....

Again, sorry for the questions I should know, but I went from a point and shoot to EOS70D of heaven ....I'm a semi-n000b.....

Even pointing me to links to fully read the differences will be great!

Thanks again guys.

Judge for yourself by plugging in the 7D to one of the boxes and moving the zoom around the scene, especially dark areas. Then scroll down the page to see how much shadow lifting has improved over the 18MP sensors. Other than that, the 7D seems better suited for dedicated birding than the 70D, when you factor FPS, build, and AF options.

Maybe stop worrying about specs when you might not know how your photography style and needs will be suited with them. It would be wise to buy something cheap now (Rebel, 60D), learn what you like and don't like, and then dig into spec sheets and tests to see what you want to upgrade to. Buying a 70D when it comes out will be fine, but it may or may not be far more camera than you end up needing. :D

If I ever decided to buy an F1 race car, I would have to learn how to drive even a low-end one first just to get any idea of what is good and what I need for getting groceries as fast as possible. ;)

Contrast detection is essentially sampling pixels off the sensor, and moving the focus around to try to maximise the contrast - the thinking being: more contrast == better focus. If I understand correctly, it's actually very accurate (more so than phase) but the camera has to hunt, because it doesn't know in which direction the focus is off (so it's a bit slow).

Phase detection is where the image is split, and an AF sensor detects the phase difference; which allows it to see in which direction (and by how much) the focus is off. It's fast, but can be a bit less accurate, and is also prone to problems (the distance from the optics to the AF sensor must be exactly the same as the distance from the optics to the imaging sensor). The dual pixel AF system is effectively doing a form of phase detection using the pixels on the sensor - i.e. fast AF in Liveview, and should be 'perfect' focus.
