Well I've just seen the initial release details of the 70D and, while it might be quite good - I particularly like the potential for WiFi remote control - the lack of a headphone jack and RAW video capture is a bit of a disappointment.

They are suggesting it will focus track but how good that is, or isn't, remains to be seen.

They are also making a big thing about the touch screen but, if you use a loupe as I do, that is also going to be a waste of time. Indeed, subject to how you access functions, the touch screen could be a right pain in the bum when trying to use a loupe.

There also doesn't seem to be any of the functionality we enjoy with Magic Lantern, such as focus peaking and viewfinder audio levels. This would make getting the camera a retrograde step in ease of use until such time as the magicians at ML manage to hack in the functions we have grown to love.

If the new autofocus works as well as proclaimed then it does remove the need for a loupe to a certain extent. Reflection from the screen may still be a problem of course in some light conditions.

It won't have a headphone jack? I'm hoping they just decided to skip out on that detail in the specs and it will actually have one. I wasn't really expecting it to shoot raw at it's rumored price point..

Since no other Canon consumer cameras shoot RAW video, its hard to be disappointed. I would be far more disappointed in a solid video focusing system that only works with crappy STM lenses. With only 1 high quality 2.8 STM lens-the 40mm prime-focusing is irrelevant. Without XLR inputs, the lack of headphone jack just means audio if going to continue to be a shortcoming of DSLRs.

I also think raw video capture would be a stretch at this price point in the Canon lineup.

All very reasonable points. I guess we are still a long way from it being a video camera that doubles as a DSLR and it doesn't seem to have gone very far to close the gap.

The sad thing is, in the same way that Canon lost ground to Nikon in digital stills photography they are going to do the same with the likes of Sony in respect of Video DSLRs.

I shot this with 7D Canon... I'd love to hear some feedback or have any support with the project anyone can lend! I have used tons of my footage from the my sail across the Pacific and made a new video project that is currently in progress. Please check it out and feel free to show some support if you can!
Thanks!

Will the 70D accept a mic with a 3.5mm output? If so, then it's not going to be a huge disappointment.

It does but without viewfinder level indication (unless you are using an external preamp which has output level indication) you are a more hampered than you need to be. If audio is important it hasn't really moved on from the 60D and would be a backward step to a 60D with ML.

What I find most frustrating is that ML has demonstrated what can be done with the Canon architecture but Canon seem to resolutely avoid adding that functionality to their cameras as standard.

I'm not a super videographer (play with the videography world slowly), but I've seen the canon video provided to dpreview.com and I love how they created the video they provided (with BTS video) - http://www.dpreview.com …-videos-show-70d-focusing (external link)

Outstanding link. Thanks for that.

I'm now starting to ponder if it could be good option. While there isn't focus peaking, if the camera obtains and stays in focus as well as the video suggests, perhaps focus peaking is redundant.

Equally, as I almost never rely on the camera audio in isolation, perhaps not having audio in the viewfinder is also do-able.

I'm certainly intrigued, and I do want one... I even entertained the thought of selling my 100-400L for it, but I probably should hold off until the price drops. ;)

As far as audio goes, It has STEREO microphones!

....Which means we will now have terrible audio from TWO mics instead of just one!:lol:

I wonder if the video editors on The Titanic ever went, "Sorry, I can't right now. I'm busy synching the Titanic..."

LOL. :-)

Have followed up more on the focusing and it would appear to have the most advanced video focusing system in the current Canon DSLR range. It also has a choice of video compression options.

I wouldn't sell my 100-400 for it but it certainly gets added to my ever growing wish list.

With WiFi on board and Canon remote apps for IOS and Android it could make a good multicopter camera as well.

I'm curious to see how they arranged the capsules and they put any thought into the design (my gut says no).
